As people increasingly turn to chatbots for advice, AI is taking on a role once filled by oracles, prophets, and divination. Webb Keane, Professor @umichlsa.bsky.social, and Ambuj Tewari, Professor @umichcse.bsky.social, write for @us.theconversation.com. 🔗 myumi.ch/Z8ANG
Modern chatbots like ChatGPT are considered opaque black boxes. This is not because the full machinery behind their computations is hidden from users. The opacity claim applies even to open-weight models, whose numerical parameters, called “weights,” are publicly available

@umich.edu clinical trial published online in @jamapediatrics.com found the IntERact program led to dramatic decrease in firearm violence among 16-to-30-year-olds using telehealth-delivered behavioral counseling sessions supplemented with digital therapeutic tools. 🔗 myumi.ch/11pG7
We know that youth that engage in risky firearm behaviors are at elevated risk to injure other people or to be harmed themselves, so to see that a preventative intervention delivered in a clinical setting can decrease the risk of these behaviors, as well as associated behaviors such as substance use, that perpetuate the cycle of firearm violence, is really encouraging.

Ultimately, it is about keeping young people safe and providing them with the tools they need to avoid violence.”

When AI agrees with us, we may become more confident in what we already believe. When it disagrees? We may not change our minds—we may change what we think of the AI. New @umichlsa.bsky.social research explores what that means for AI advice and chatbot design. 🔗 myumi.ch/7J64y
