Blood Dungeon (Messhof, 2026) Very silly, vulgar, hand-drawn platformer that's effectively "Vampire Survivors" meets "Pizza Tower." You have auto-firing weapons; dodge enemies, pick up XP and gold, pick random upgrades, survive as long as you can, unlock new drops. (The balance is... challenging.)

Star Wars: Zero Company (Bit Reactor, 2026) I can't gush about this enough. It's XCOM with an actual decent Star Wars story, not just a reskin. Occasional bugs, but good writing and VA, the vibes are immaculate, and it still has that XCOM crunch of cover, overwatch, and "how did I miss a 95% shot."

ZeroRanger (System Erasure, 2018) A love letter to classic vertical shmups, on many levels. It starts off welcoming, but be warned, it's a SE game (Void Stranger devs) -- multiple loops, alternate timelines, hidden cheevos, and voluntary save erasure are on the table. References to Saṃsāra are apt.

PAX West 2026 in the bag. Quiet one this year, reminiscent of the Covid era. Still had fun — played a bunch of Steel Battalion and Densha de Go, added a bunch of indies to the steam wishlist, ate too much at elephant & castle, came home with a new boardgame and a pile of pins.

Leaf Blower Man: This Game Blows! (Unbound Creations, 2023) This starts off as a comedy game about annoying your neighbors by running a leafblower at 6am, but rapidly turns into a satire/parody about advertising, DLC, and dark patterns in mobile game dev. It's short (<30min) and very silly.

Nine Sols (Red Candle Games, 2024) Metroidvania with an emphasis on precision parrying, strongly inspired by Sekiro. Red Candle's better known for story-heavy horror games (Detention, Devotion), so this was a huge surprise, and it's fantastic. Brutally hard but feels fair and rewarding.

Ambrosia Sky: Act Two (2026, Soft Rains) A.S. Act One was one of my surprise favorites of 2025, but ended on a cliffhanger. The conclusion has now arrived as free DLC, and it's largely more of the same: Powerwashing and collecting in space while ruminating on homecomings, regret, and relationships.

Nitro Gen Omega (2026, DESTINYbit) Timeline strategy mech battler, plus a management sim. Maintain your mech, train up your crew (and get them to like each other), pick up jobs for cash, save the world. Has a brutal difficulty curve and some balancing flaws, but the core combat loop hooked me hard.

CYGNI: All Guns Blazing (2024, KeelWorks) Not sure if I'd call this a twin-stick shooter on rails, or a spectacle shmup. You've got limited angled shooting and it throws absurd amounts of bullets/enemies at you, but also constant powerups, and you can shift your power budget between shields/damage.

End of Starchild (2026, Em Essex) MSX outdoes herself with a sequel to 2021's Time Tripper (previously mentioned upthread), pushing the limits of what's possible with the Doom engine in a new exploration/puzzle FPS. Including, oddly enough, an 8-bit sprite RPG embedded in the main game.

Herdling (2025, Okomotive) It's "Journey" with cows. Tame Calicorns, feed them, pet them, and guide them up the mountain. Chill music, varied biomes, and doesn't overstay its welcome (~4 hours to complete going into it blind). Strong recommend!

Steel Assault (2021, Zenovia) Kickstarter-ed homage to 16-bit action platformers, with a grapple that calls out Bionic Commando in particular. It varies between "great fun" and "brutally annoying chip damage / staggering mixed with insta-kill pits." Quite short, only 6 levels total.

Earthion (2025, Ancient/Bitwave) A classic horizontal shmup actually written for the Sega Genesis; the Steam release is an emulator! Includes a great FM soundtrack by Yuzo Koshiro, the chiptune GOAT. Feels fantastic to play, but also a classic quarter-eater that gets ridiculously hard mid-game.

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle: Order of Giants DLC (2026, MachineGames) Short self-contained side story, set in some corners of Rome outside the Vatican; four to five hours tops. It was fun, but definitely wait for it to go on sale. What matters most: it has the "pet the cat" achievement.

Typing Break (2026, Tholus) Tower defense (maybe more "auto-shmup"?) welded to a typing game. Type out a weapon name (e.g. "PISTOL") to start firing; level-ups can give you both more weapons, and adjectives to modify them, which can be stacked to make some very broken combinations if you type fast.
