Let’s stop treating "leaving academia" as negative. Scientists train for academia, industry, or what suits them. Industry isn’t an alternative; it’s a choice. In fields like engineering, most PhDs go to industry, and no one calls it "leaving academia." We should train scientists for diverse paths.

Hey folks! I got a tattoo of my beloved PIEZO ion channel on my arm! Now I can show how they activate (flatten) under pressure by flexing—Will add a bit of performance art to my science talks 🧪🧠.

It is good to have a perspective of the genocide in Gaza. Today we remember Nahida Khalil Anton Samar Kamal Anton, and all those killed in this war. open.substack.com/pub/michaelm...

can roaches be part of the solution to making neurophysiology, a typically very elite field, more accessible? in Arizona, @ulisesricoy.bsky.social & colleagues are using the critters to create low cost educational experiments also ft. @backyardbrains.bsky.social www.statnews.com/2024/12/10/c...

Researchers are betting on cockroaches as the cure to elitism in neuroscience
Cockroaches are a hardy pest, and often elicit disgust. But they do have a few things going for them: They are cheap, can be raised in a space as small as

The JOY I just felt in seeing this paper from the @drverpeut.bsky.social and @ulisesricoy.bsky.social labs about teaching ML/automated behavior tracking using cockroaches -- been wanting to do something like this with our students and feeling inspired now! 🪳 www.eneuro.org/content/earl...

A few reasons why I love Patagonia!📷 #photography #nature #naturephotography #landscape #landscapephotography #patagonia #mountains
Patagonia is breathtaking, the ever changing light & weather is what makes it so very special. In Torres del Paine National Park, a spot lit iceberg is dwarfed by mountains already in the shade, except for the jagged summit, bathed in the warm afternoon sun. This is what I love about Patagonia! After a 3 am start and 12 km hike to mount Cerro Torre, I was surrounded by drizzle and clouds. It was miserable. But just a few minutes later I was graced by the most beautiful light! An unforgettable morning in Patagonia's Torres del Paine National Park. Gale force winds transform the calm turquoise waters of Lago Pehoe into a raging sea, blowing away crashing waves and literally lifting the water off the surface!Glorious Mount Fitz Roy emerges from the clouds, as strong winds put an end to a cloudy morning. Patagonia is challenging to photograph, the mountains can be hidden for days, but when they clear, the beauty is unmatched!
