While I could not make it to Sweden last week, my giant Viking head apparently did. Delighted to serve as discussant for 3 excellent papers at Lund University's workshop on Positive Obligations in ECtHR case law. Thanks to all involved - and photo credit to wondeful @sarahganty.bsky.social. 🇸🇪

Just back from gorgeous San Francisco, where I presented a few scribbles from a work-in-progress paper on Jewish historical memory & European citizenship at the @lawandsociety.bsky.social conference. Much of the pleasure was about meeting old friends, new colleagues, & revisiting the Bay Area. 🇺🇸

A leggerezza of conferencing in Pisa. Thanks to Giacomo Delledonne, @martinicogi.bsky.social, Rebecca Veneziano & Roberto Mahajnah at Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna for a charming event on mnemonic constitutionalism - a concept I formulated some years ago & am now refining as a methodological framework.

Back to the @eui-eu.bsky.social in Florence – 15 years after my PhD defence. Grateful to the EUI IR Working Group for inviting me to discuss our new book “The Politics of Memory Laws”(@hartpublishing.bsky.social 2025). ➡️ Brilliant PhDs & postdocs – pages of notes, worth of another volume already.

My new @verfassungsblog.de analysis examines the CJEU’s Shipov(-a) judgment (12 March 2026) on recognition of gender identity of a #trans person under EU law. I explain how the case reflects the rise of EU sexual citizenship via free movement: 🔗 verfassungsblog.de/sexual-citiz...

Four years after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, in his co-edited book Asser Institute researcher Uladzislau Belavusau highlights how the Kremlin used 'memory laws' to deny Ukraine’s historical agency and weaponised history through legislation. 🔗 Read more: lnkd.in/eFQS3VSS #MemoryLaws #Ukraine

In the courtroom of history, constitutions testify – in full voice, sotto voce or through silence itself. 📘 My review of Huang’s (ed.) book “Constitutionalizing Transitional Justice” (Routledge 2024), forthcoming in the Int Journal of Const Law, is available on: papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers....

One 2025 piece that specially matters to me: a chapter on #Belarus in the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian war, and its laws on historical memory, framed by citing Nobel laureate Aleś Bialiatski – just released from prison (for even bleak chapters need not end without hope): papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers....

Yesterday I presented my research on the global rise of memory laws at a workshop inspired by the Oscar-winning film “Ainda Estou Aqui”, hosted by the Escola da Magistratura do Rio de Janeiro. 🇳🇱 Mijn opiniestuk vandaag in @volkskrant.nl: waarom NL bij Keti Koti kiest voor koninklijke excuses i.p.v. parlementaire herinneringswetten. 🇬🇧 My op-ed today in @volkskrant.nl: on why Dutch royal apologies may work better than memory laws by parliaments. 🔗 www.volkskrant.nl/columns-opin...
