Really intrigued by Metcalfe's perspective on the post-2017 UAP nonsense, and he makes the observation obvious to many, that Vallee doesn't practice actual psychosocial science while he does rely on charisma. Ken was in the chat and is very friendly. Hm. How mauve.

I really resonate with this a lot. This passage in particular is a perfect description of dysfunctional skepticism.

Just prior to my exit from the community where I thought I was making a difference, I was stunned by a former acquaintance who had a comment after a talk I gave about my book. I had discussed the social implications of paranormal investigators and what that might mean in terms of science education and skeptical involvement. He said “Good talk, but why do you bother with these paranormalists? It’s all BS.” He had entirely missed the point of what I spent 30 minutes explaining. I realized I had lost even the community that I thought supported me. He, and others, didn’t see any value in thinking about strange human experiences or phenomena even though these are ubiquitous throughout our history. More times than I could count, the unbelievers dismissed (or ridiculed) the claims and didn’t put in any further thought to them.

If not outright dismissing the incident, skeptical commenters have an unfortunate tendency to explain a strange claim with alternate, implausible claim, mostly without much evidence. (For example, the so-called “swamp gas” claim: it wasn’t a UFO, it was “swamp gas” - which actually makes zero sense in the context.) And, worse, they do it confidently, without thinking about the details or logistics. They assume stuff instead. It’s a fair criticism by paranormalists who say that most Skeptical opinionators don’t know much about the subject they are opining about.

Someone reports a strange bipedal creature sighting, a curtain of light prior to an earthquake, or an apparition on their security camera. The dismissive Skeptic shuts down investigation by saying, "It’s bogus.” These categorical things (like monsters, UFOs or ghosts) aren’t real, they say, so there is no point in even discussing it any further. I disagreed. If a person had an unexplained experience that deeply affected them, then it deserves some consideration.

From an account of a trip to the moon told by Annie York, translated by Mamie Howard Our Tellings: Interior Salish Stories of the Nlha7kápmx People, Compiled and edited by Darwin Hanna and Mamie Henry, UBC Press 1996

To get the air basket moving, he had to run alongside it and
then jump into it once it was airborne. Through the air he flew.
Eventually, the air basket landed and the man lifted the lid and
peeked out. There were pithouses all around him and smoke was
coming out of the top of each. He entered one, but he couldn't see
anyone; all he could see were basket reeds moving, and he could
hear women talking. Baskets lined the walls of the house. As he
reached over to pick one up, he was unable to stand up, and an old
woman's voice said, 'Do not try to take one of those baskets or you
will never be able to leave this place.' Quickly, the man left that pithouse and entered another.
He couldn't see anyone in this pithouse either, although he
could hear voices. Beautiful mats and blankets were around the
walls of the pithouse. He saw one mat that he was very fond of, so
he began to take it down from the wall. Instantly, he was covered
with mats, and again the voice said to him, 'Do not steal from us, as
stealing is a bad thing to do. If you take that mat, you will never see
your home again.' He hung the mats back on the wall.
The man entered another pithouse, where he saw lots of
arrows, knives, stone hammers, and ammunition. There was also a
packsack in this house, so he began to fill it with the various implements. All at once, everything fell on top of him and he received a
black eye. 'Oh, these people are so mean to me!' he thought to himself as he lay on the floor.
'Never, never steal!' said the voice once again.
'Okay, I won't steal from you!' he replied.
Another person said to him, 'Now, you must do only what is
right.'
He began to pick up the arrows and put them back in their place
- but instantly, everything was back in its place
