Really intrigued by Metcalfe's perspective on the post-2017 UAP nonsense, and he makes the observation obvious to many, that Vallee doesn't practice actual psychosocial science while he does rely on charisma. Ken was in the chat and is very friendly. Hm. How mauve.

"Life, Death, and Dollars Spent: The Canadian government and the Ehattesaht First Nation dropped a huge chunk of change trying to save the stranded killer whale kʷiisaḥiʔis (Brave Little Hunter). Now, they’re wondering how to make up the money." by Larry Pynn, Hakai Magazine, August 22, 2024

For Harvey, the argument in favor of rescuing a stranded animal is stronger when humans are obviously to blame for the animal’s plight, such as a whale entangled in fishing gear, and weaker for natural events such as starvation caused by, say, an El Niño–induced lack of food. However, the notion of “natural” has been stretched razor-thin by climate change, habitat loss, and other issues.

The Marine Mammal Center, based in California, is one of the world’s largest marine mammal rescue and rehabilitation organizations. As Jeff Boehm, a veterinarian and the center’s chief external relations officer, says: “In the 50 years of this organization, what we’ve witnessed is that in almost every situation we can connect the dots to some action of humans.”

Wonderful talk with Mr. Anthony Lee on the tragic social history of the Utes and Dine under White and Mormon settler colonialism and the real history of skinwalkers, which is far more fascinating than the bastardized legend popular today. @ericalukes.bsky.social @expandingfrontiersresearch.org

Tonight my coworker requested Within You Without You from SPLHCB, and then we listened to Stand Up by Jethro Tull. Then he told me he hates bums, so I had a little chat with him about that. That was crazy.

I’m not dead. I sleep sometimes. Sleep comes very close to death, everyone knows that. The dead walk in dreams, everyone knows that. They come to you alive, and they say things. They walk out of death into the dreams.

I don't know what Keysar means about resources, a possible sign the study carries implicit biases. Still, I wonder if the effect they saw in young people today is because of exposure to online cultures that promote zero-sum thinking. news.uchicago.edu/story/listen...

To answer this question, Kricheli-Katz returned to the World Value Survey. Since it has collected data for decades, the survey allows researchers to see trends from previous generations all over the world. When she methodically compared the different waves of data, Kricheli-Katz found that the trend still held true. People became less zero-sum as they aged.

However, the survey data also showed that young people today have become even more zero-sum thinkers.

“We don't really have an explanation for this. It could be that, for some reason, people perceive resources as more and more scarce, even though, actually, there's a lot more to be shared now than years ago,” Keysar said.

Article Summary: "In new study, UChicago psychologists found that older people see the world as less win-lose than younger people"
