Binchy’s legacy at UCD lives on through the Maeve Binchy UCD Travel Award, inaugurated in 2014 to commemorate her love of travel and world-celebrated creative writing. It was established by her late husband following her death.

Designed by Antonella Napolione, the new commemorative coin carries the inscription ‘MAEVE BINCHY 1940–2012’, alongside the €15 denomination, the harp, the year 2026 and Éire.

Governor Makhlouf presented the coin to the Binchy family at a launch in Dalkey Castle & Heritage Centre. The event also remembered Maeve’s husband, author Gordon Snell, who passed away in April. The couple wrote together at their Dalkey home.

Born in Dalkey, Co. Dublin, Maeve Binchy studied History at University College Dublin. She became one of Ireland’s most beloved authors, with novels including Circle of Friends, Tara Road and Evening Class. Her debut novel, Light a Penny Candle, was published in 1982.
