Recently made fresh edits to my creative manifesto, which I'm hoping to do maybe twice a year. It's satisfying to have a document like this to return to once in a while. It's a good practice to state what we believe from time to time. tysonpease.com/manifesto/

Monochrome Heights is now available for PC! Anyone who likes tricky platformers should take a look Besides the cover art & logo, I made the in-game character portraits (over 100!) and concept art for some of the cutscene backgrounds. What a joy to see it all as a part of the final product

So exciting to see my cover art and especially the concept art I made now fully realized for in-game cutscene backgrounds. The game is looking *nice* 😎

Are there some tech issues with the website? Or maybe it's me? I'm currently on mobile and can't get to checkout. Can't even add to my cart on desktop. Using Firefox in both instances, hmm...

I went back to this image from 5+ years ago (!!) for some light touch-up. A fun little illustration. I like its youthful imperfect vibes. When are you ready for adventure? The moment you set out, of course!

Here's the development material for the concept / vibes series. I'm happy with how the final pieces came out, but I still like these sketches, too!

The final piece in my concept / vibes vignette series! This one was the toughest. I started with the crystalline gash idea but struggled to pin down a composition. I like the cross-section approach here. It offers a unique perspective and differentiates the image from the others in the series.

My maybe-favorite entry from the concept / vibes series? Sometimes you begin an image without fully knowing how you’ll resolve it. The tree with sunlight breaking through the canopy was one of those. With some experimenting I settled on something I liked.

Overall the in-store experience was so much better than the dumpster fire of online preorders the night before. I'm relieved it worked out and that I had the flexibility to try for Plan B the next day. Phew! 😌 (end thread)

About 5 minutes before the store opened, we lined up according to our numbers. The last ticket / system was accounted for about 2 min before opening

At one point we joked about how it was like at a deli. And then someone remembered there was a grocery store at the other end of the strip mall… …5 minutes later, we had a length of actual deli tickets to use. It was great, it all worked so smoothly

I preordered via in-store GameStop, of all places. Waited outside the store for a couple of hours with a chill group. We didn't even need a line. Instead we had a number system based on order of arrival. As long as you stayed within the (vast) parking lot, you kept your number

This is the first piece in the series where I got a little more curious about ways to explore the vignette format. The negative space helps form the path into the world of the illustration.

The first in my concept / vibes illustration series for a personal project in development. I’ve spent loads of time iterating on designs in the past. For this series I wanted to explore a range of gut-feeling aesthetics relevant to the project. (I'll make this a 🧵 for the series, more soon)

Maybe the difference will come from doing what I've done in the past but on a platform that's *not* trying to harvest my data or profit from my contributions. Given the general state of things rn, that might be enough for a fresh start. 7/7 end 🧵

Over the years I've done a number of close studies of artists whose work I really enjoy, to see what I can learn from their work. I've compiled the studies into "sketchbooks" on my website tysonpease.com/sketchbooks/
close watercolor and pen & ink study of a 6-panel comics page based on one originally made by Shotaro Ishinomori for the Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past comic. the page depicts the hero Link narrowly avoiding an attack from pig demon Ganon and making a counter attack that serves as a critical blow.close pen & ink study of Calvin's treehouse from Calvin & Hobbes, based on work originally by Bill Watterson. this study of the treehouse is empty of Calvin or Hobbes but still contains its classic skull and crossbones flaga close pen & ink study of a full-page panel from the comic Bone, based on one originally made by Jeff Smith. in an empty forest, tall trees reach upward among ferns and grass, and a lone moss stone sits waiting. in the original composition, the character Thorn experienced a revelation; in this study she is absent

Around the release of Smash Bros Ultimate, I did an October series of Smash Bros digital inkwash character illos with my 32 top picks for fighters. It was my first time depicting a lot of these characters – a fun challenge! tysonpease.com/portfolio/sm...
inkwash vignette character art of horned pig demon Ganon from the Legend of Zelda series, as depicted at the end of the game Ocarina of Time. Ganon's upper torso is shown as he faces the viewer; he roars and wields large swords while lightning strikes in the backgroundinkwash illustration of the character Zero from the Mega Man X series. in a side-facing pose, Zero holds his energy sword while leaping upward; in the background, the pitch black is broken by gritty shaft of diagonal lightinkwash illustration of the crocodile-like character King K Rool from the Donkey Kong Country series. K Rool faces the viewer with one hand on his hip and the other holding his blunderbuss as it rests on his shoulders. loose silhouettes of tropical trees fill the backgroundinkwash vignette illustration of the character Geno from the video game Super Mario RPG. Geno faces the viewer while floating in space before a sky filled with stars; he holds up one smoking finger as if it were a pistol that was recently fired. above him is a glowing five-pointed star and wisps of Northern Lights. far below him in the distance is a planet, on which Peach's castle can be seen

More design work, this time focused on logos. Finding clear, simple, expressive ways to communicate a core idea can be oh so satisfying
logo for Ellipsem Jewelry, a studio whose designs are light, elegant, and naturalistic. the logo has thin even lettering, a multi-line circular border, a prominent "ej," and an orange leaf dot for the janimated logo for the video game Monochrome Heights. the logo is in pixelated black and white to complement the in game visuals. the animation consists of a purple reflection flashing diagonally across the text, similar to the effect on title screens of some video games from the 1980s and '90slogo for Pots in Maine, a long-running pottery studio based in Litchfield, Maine with a distinctive style and mug. a simple thin gray ring encircles the turquoise silhouette of the studio's most well-known mug. cut out from the mug shape is a dragonfly silhouette, one of several recurring design elements painted on the mugs. above the mug shape, Pots in Maine is written in semi-cursive, while along the bottom in semi-distressed serif font is the studio's locationlogo for Tyson's studio / website. centered in a black circle is a white five-point star drawn and filled in graphite. within this, drawn in black graphite, are Tyson's initials, TP
