I went back to this image from 5+ years ago (!!) for some light touch-up. A fun little illustration. I like its youthful imperfect vibes. When are you ready for adventure? The moment you set out, of course!

Here's the development material for the concept / vibes series. I'm happy with how the final pieces came out, but I still like these sketches, too!
collection of colored sketches depicting the illustration series; includes images of a dark forest, an open field, a vast ocean, a giant tree, and a deep cave; also depicted is a fox-child featured in several entries in the series

It's been very rainy today. Reminded me of this piece from lockdown

The final piece in my concept / vibes vignette series! This one was the toughest. I started with the crystalline gash idea but struggled to pin down a composition. I like the cross-section approach here. It offers a unique perspective and differentiates the image from the others in the series.

My maybe-favorite entry from the concept / vibes series? Sometimes you begin an image without fully knowing how you’ll resolve it. The tree with sunlight breaking through the canopy was one of those. With some experimenting I settled on something I liked.

Overall the in-store experience was so much better than the dumpster fire of online preorders the night before. I'm relieved it worked out and that I had the flexibility to try for Plan B the next day. Phew! 😌 (end thread)

This is the first piece in the series where I got a little more curious about ways to explore the vignette format. The negative space helps form the path into the world of the illustration.

The second piece from my concept / vibes vignette series. It was fun figuring out how to depict the waves and playing around with using waves to frame the bottom half of the piece.

The first in my concept / vibes illustration series for a personal project in development. I’ve spent loads of time iterating on designs in the past. For this series I wanted to explore a range of gut-feeling aesthetics relevant to the project. (I'll make this a 🧵 for the series, more soon)

Over the years I've done a number of close studies of artists whose work I really enjoy, to see what I can learn from their work. I've compiled the studies into "sketchbooks" on my website tysonpease.com/sketchbooks/
close watercolor and pen & ink study of a 6-panel comics page based on one originally made by Shotaro Ishinomori for the Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past comic. the page depicts the hero Link narrowly avoiding an attack from pig demon Ganon and making a counter attack that serves as a critical blow.close pen & ink study of Calvin's treehouse from Calvin & Hobbes, based on work originally by Bill Watterson. this study of the treehouse is empty of Calvin or Hobbes but still contains its classic skull and crossbones flaga close pen & ink study of a full-page panel from the comic Bone, based on one originally made by Jeff Smith. in an empty forest, tall trees reach upward among ferns and grass, and a lone moss stone sits waiting. in the original composition, the character Thorn experienced a revelation; in this study she is absent

Around the release of Smash Bros Ultimate, I did an October series of Smash Bros digital inkwash character illos with my 32 top picks for fighters. It was my first time depicting a lot of these characters – a fun challenge! tysonpease.com/portfolio/sm...
inkwash vignette character art of horned pig demon Ganon from the Legend of Zelda series, as depicted at the end of the game Ocarina of Time. Ganon's upper torso is shown as he faces the viewer; he roars and wields large swords while lightning strikes in the backgroundinkwash illustration of the character Zero from the Mega Man X series. in a side-facing pose, Zero holds his energy sword while leaping upward; in the background, the pitch black is broken by gritty shaft of diagonal lightinkwash illustration of the crocodile-like character King K Rool from the Donkey Kong Country series. K Rool faces the viewer with one hand on his hip and the other holding his blunderbuss as it rests on his shoulders. loose silhouettes of tropical trees fill the backgroundinkwash vignette illustration of the character Geno from the video game Super Mario RPG. Geno faces the viewer while floating in space before a sky filled with stars; he holds up one smoking finger as if it were a pistol that was recently fired. above him is a glowing five-pointed star and wisps of Northern Lights. far below him in the distance is a planet, on which Peach's castle can be seen

A few years back I did a series of digital inkwash poetry comics called Haiku What I Can. A haiku comic has a unique ability to capture a moment. Of all the comics I've published, this one has resonated with folks the most tysonpease.com/portfolio/ha...
an inkwash 3-panel haiku comic depicting a mushroom and small ferns. the text reads: "Standing, red cap tipped, | as if waiting just for you— | chipper young mushroom."an inkwash 3-panel haiku comic depicting a large boulder sitting in a forest, with moss and a small sapling growing out of its top. the text reads: "Rests on mountain throne | with crown of moss and samplings: | lord of the boulders."an inkwash 3-panel haiku comic depicting a lilac branch with withering flowers. the text reads: "Summer's frail herald | wilting in mid-season heat— | fairweather lilac."an inkwash 2-panel extended haiku comic depicting a crumpled piece of paper and an open walking path that runs alongside a river. the text reads: "My first suggestion | for finding a solution: | go out for a walk. | Impossible knots | loosen with footsteps."

More design work, this time focused on logos. Finding clear, simple, expressive ways to communicate a core idea can be oh so satisfying
logo for Ellipsem Jewelry, a studio whose designs are light, elegant, and naturalistic. the logo has thin even lettering, a multi-line circular border, a prominent "ej," and an orange leaf dot for the janimated logo for the video game Monochrome Heights. the logo is in pixelated black and white to complement the in game visuals. the animation consists of a purple reflection flashing diagonally across the text, similar to the effect on title screens of some video games from the 1980s and '90slogo for Pots in Maine, a long-running pottery studio based in Litchfield, Maine with a distinctive style and mug. a simple thin gray ring encircles the turquoise silhouette of the studio's most well-known mug. cut out from the mug shape is a dragonfly silhouette, one of several recurring design elements painted on the mugs. above the mug shape, Pots in Maine is written in semi-cursive, while along the bottom in semi-distressed serif font is the studio's locationlogo for Tyson's studio / website. centered in a black circle is a white five-point star drawn and filled in graphite. within this, drawn in black graphite, are Tyson's initials, TP

A few pieces of design work I've done. I like exploring the ways composition and the arrangement of elements can serve a project's goals tysonpease.com/design/
full illustration with logo text that serves as cover art for the video game Monochrome Heights. a black and white robot runs along similarly colored platforms on his way up a colorful tower full of hazards. the logo text is in black and white and uses a heavily pixelated style to complement the pixelated graphics of the game itselforange monochromatic illustration for the nonprofit Seacoast Eat Local, for use in promoting their farmers markets. the image depicts two pairs of hands as they exchange a tied bunch of carrots, from the grower (wearing plaid) to the shopper (wearing a solid-color sweatshirt). a simple circular background helps frame the imagefood label for Tender Soles Farms' Sweet Chi Kimchi. the label is designed to wrap around a jar. the label's central element is circular and displays the farm name, product name, note of its organic origin, and net weight, with a mandala collage of the kimchi's ingredients (cabbage, peppers, carrots, onions, and garlic) in the background. the left side of the label includes a basic silhouette logo for the farm with about text. the right side lists the farm's address, kimchi ingredients, storage instructions, and a MOFGA organic certification logo. the label features golden yellow accentscover illustration for Tyson's poetry comicbook, Haiku What I Can. the cover features an inkwash style illustration of Daicey Pond and Mount Katahdin of Baxter State Park in Maine, with light splashes of inkwash scattered elsewhere over the cover. the title, subtitle, and author name are lowercase and handwritten. the background color is salmon pink, the ink work a muted purple

Working on character-focused art puts me in my creative happy place more than any other kind. I've done a good bit of fan art but also original characters, too tysonpease.com/illustration/
dreamlike vignette illustration of a young anthropomorphized fox explorer in a natural setting as he looks upon a large tree rooted in shallow water. sun beams break through the tree's canopy. a path leads from where the fox stands to the base of the tree, where a short staircase leads into a heart-shaped opening in the treefan art illustration of the characters John and Sam from the video game Eastward. before a yellow background, John swings his trusty frying pan while Sam, on John's shoulders, prepares a psychic attackcharacter collage illustration depicting original characters. in the foreground stand an anthropomorphized young fox, adult bear, small bird, and horned imp wearing glasses. in the background are powerful guardians: a robed monkey empress with horned creature-like crown, a lion in a cloak, a masked wolf with throwing blades, an elephant queen, and an ancient tree with a face. in the distant background, a horned shadow being grins menacingly over the rest of the castillustration of an anthropomorphized mouse in a red cap, scarf, coat, and corduroys playing a mouse-sized fiddle atop a tree stump in a dark forest. a fallen red maple leaf rests in front of the stump. a few rays of sunlight break through the gloom onto the mouse, while in the background mist rolls between the trees

It was a creative challenge for sure, but by doing some experimentation and play, I was able to establish a shared expressive eye-based language among the cast that gets the job done. (2/4)

More from the upcoming indie game Monochrome Heights. I was tasked with making expressive in-game portraits for the pre-existing robot cast for use during cutscenes. That's right, expressive robots! Robots without eyebrows or mouths! (1/4)

A closeup from my cover art for the video game Monochrome Heights. This is the lead character, Happy, a robot who has to climb a huge tower full of hazards! I didn't design him, but it was up to me to translate his purely pixelated form into a more fully illustrative style. It was a fun challenge!

I’ve been contributing art to the in-development video game Monochrome Heights on and off since last year. It's been fun! I’m excited to show my work and discuss a bit about the process on my website.
