#FossilFriday Kutchicetus minimus, a sea otter-sized remingtonocetid whale from Eocene India. #paleoart #paleontology #whale
Illustration of Kutchicetus, a primitive whale that looks like an otter. It has a large head with wide a long, narrow, flute-shaped snout, wide cheekbones, and tiny eyes near the top of its head. It has four short legs with webbed feet and a long, flattened tail like that of an otter or beaver. It has short fur that is light brown with a cream-colored underbelly. Four rows of cream-colored spots go down the animal’s back and sides. It’s depicted in a swimming pose as if it’s diving in search of prey.

It’s finally here! Meet Crocodylus lucivenator, a new species of Pliocene crocodile from Hadar, Ethiopia, described today by my mentor Chris Brochu and his colleagues. I had the honor of creating the press illustration. Open access paper here: doi.org/10.1080/1477...
An illustration of the extinct crocodile, Crocodylus lucivenator, shown underwater, stalking an adult male Australopithecus afarensis getting a drink from shore. The scene takes place along a river surrounded by a dense gallery forest, with two antelope-like relatives of giraffes, Sivatherium maurusium, watching from the edge of the trees.

New fossils may settle debate over mysterious sail-backed spinosaurs
Spinosaurs have sometimes been portrayed as swimmers or divers, but a new species of these dinosaurs bolsters the idea that they were more like gigantic herons

Prehistoric Planet-inspired Tarbosaurus. Commission for a private client. #paleoart #sciart #dinosaur #tarbosaurus #prehistoricplanet
Tarbosaurus, T. rex’s Asian cousin, based on the design from Prehistoric Planet. It’s red-orange in color with a creamy underbelly and spots, which are outlined in brown. It has a keratinized ridge on its nose and hornlets over each eye, and a thin coat of sparse, hairlike feathers on the neck and back.

I’m sure some of it was getting mileage out of the rigs they had, but ZT1’s Dinosaur Digs felt like a much better cross section of dinosaur diversity. I wish Dino Danger could’ve been the 2’s version of that, with Extinct Animals then being a non-dino expansion, but oh well. Still love them.

What always felt odd to me wasn’t even the designs (some were good, some were… uh…), it was the roster. I loved the huge variety of mammals, but some of the choices were weird. Stokesosaurus but no mammoths? Three raptors and no ornithopods? What are we doing?

Warmup sketch from last night, based on a project idea I’ve had for a while. Maybe this can become the first illustration in a series once commissioned work is done. More info about the concept in the alt text. #sketch #paleoart #plesiosaur #cryptozoology #lochnessmonster #nessie
Rough sketch comparing a generic plesiosaur to the Loch Ness Monster, showing how different they are. The plesiosaur has a snakelike head, a sleek, egg-shaped body, and a short tail with a paddle. The Loch Ness Monster has a horselike head with two small horns, a bulky body with three humps, and a long tail ending in a point.

4. Make more time to draw for myself without an end goal so art remains a source of joy instead of another thing to stress about. 5. Combine 1-4 to break bad habits and, hopefully, improve my confidence, thereby ensuring people will feel bad if they publicly shame me for not achieving said goal 😉

1. Get better at landscapes (especially plants) and environmental lighting. 2. Improve my ability to visualize objects in space and draw more dynamic poses and compositions. 3. As an extension of 2, get better at extrapolating from reference images instead of just following them to the letter.

However, I don’t think anything has ever captured my imagination the same way that Luis V. Rey’s Therizinosaurus did. It is, to this day, my absolute favorite piece of paleoart.

Jan Sovak’s art really captured the way dinosaurs FELT when I was a kid. Active, post-JP dinosaurs in an ethereal, perpetually hazy primordial world, with a handful of feathered dinosaurs as something mysterious and new just beginning to emerge from the shadows.

(2/2) The current otter exhibit is tiny and really showing its age, and the current bald eagle exhibit is a converted education pavilion. Compare that with what’s in the wild Iowa renderings. It’s night and day. youtu.be/q9fyv3JLaHo?...

(1/2) AFAIK there are no plans for gorillas. Still, rhinos seemed like something that would never happen when I was a kid, so who knows what the future will bring? Yes, the only new animals in Wild Iowa will be bobcats. However, the new river otter and bald eagle enclosures will be very welcome.
