#FossilFriday Kutchicetus minimus, a sea otter-sized remingtonocetid whale from Eocene India. #paleoart #paleontology #whale
Illustration of Kutchicetus, a primitive whale that looks like an otter. It has a large head with wide a long, narrow, flute-shaped snout, wide cheekbones, and tiny eyes near the top of its head. It has four short legs with webbed feet and a long, flattened tail like that of an otter or beaver. It has short fur that is light brown with a cream-colored underbelly. Four rows of cream-colored spots go down the animal’s back and sides. It’s depicted in a swimming pose as if it’s diving in search of prey.

It’s finally here! Meet Crocodylus lucivenator, a new species of Pliocene crocodile from Hadar, Ethiopia, described today by my mentor Chris Brochu and his colleagues. I had the honor of creating the press illustration. Open access paper here: doi.org/10.1080/1477...
An illustration of the extinct crocodile, Crocodylus lucivenator, shown underwater, stalking an adult male Australopithecus afarensis getting a drink from shore. The scene takes place along a river surrounded by a dense gallery forest, with two antelope-like relatives of giraffes, Sivatherium maurusium, watching from the edge of the trees.

Tarbosaurus, T. rex’s Asian cousin, based on the design from Prehistoric Planet. It’s red-orange in color with a creamy underbelly and spots, which are outlined in brown. It has a keratinized ridge on its nose and hornlets over each eye, and a thin coat of sparse, hairlike feathers on the neck and back.

Warmup sketch from last night, based on a project idea I’ve had for a while. Maybe this can become the first illustration in a series once commissioned work is done. More info about the concept in the alt text. #sketch #paleoart #plesiosaur #cryptozoology #lochnessmonster #nessie
Rough sketch comparing a generic plesiosaur to the Loch Ness Monster, showing how different they are. The plesiosaur has a snakelike head, a sleek, egg-shaped body, and a short tail with a paddle. The Loch Ness Monster has a horselike head with two small horns, a bulky body with three humps, and a long tail ending in a point.

in case you're wondering, "what's the harm in claiming an extinct species has been brought back from the dead" when it most certainly has not, our interior secretary is already using it to justify taking animals off the endangered species list
The mission of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is to work with others to “conserve, protect, and enhance fish, wildlife, plants, and their habitats for the continuing benefit of the American people.”

The Department of the Interior is excited about the potential of “de-extinction” technology and how it may serve broader purposes beyond the recovery of lost species, including strengthening biodiversity protection efforts and helping endangered or at-risk species.

The Endangered Species List has become like the Hotel California: once a species enters, they never leave. In fact, 97 percent of species that are added to the endangered list remain there. This is because the status quo is focused on regulation more than innovation.

It’s time to fundamentally change how we think about species conservation. Going forward, we must celebrate removals from the endangered list - not additions. The only thing we’d like to see go extinct is the need for an endangered species list to exist. We need to continue improving recovery efforts to make that a reality, and the marvel of “de-extinction” technology can help forge a future where populations are never at risk.

Since the dawn of our nation, it has been innovation – not regulation – that has spawned American greatness. The revival of the Dire Wolf heralds the advent of a thrilling new era of scientific wonder, showcasing how the concept of “de-extinction” can serve as a bedrock for modern species conservation.

The Dire Wolf revival carries profound cultural significance as it embodies strength and courage that is deeply encoded within the DNA of American identity and tribal heritage.

Breakthroughs of this nature will inspire leading minds and future generations of innovators to chase the impossible, capture it, and unleash its potential!

The Department of the Interior looks forward to a vibrant future full of innovation that advances core missions such as wildlife conservation.

The company can’t get basic skeletal anatomy correct but sure let’s trust them to “deextinct” species 🧪
Screenshot of a page on Colossal Laboratories & Biosciences webpage titled “Dire Wolf 2.0”.

There is a diagram of a loping wolf cut away to reveal the skeleton. Many, but not all bones are labelled, and some are labelled incorrectly. Scapula and radius are misspelled. The thoracic vertebrae are called “dorsal” which is a term used in reptiles. The arrow for lumbar points to a thoracic vertebra. There are separate labels for caudal and tail bones, which are the same type of vertebra. The arrow for patella seems to point at the back of the knee joint. The hind foot just says “toe digits posterior.” The label for metacarpal bones points to the carpals, and the label for carpus points to the radius/ulna. There is no sternum in the figure but it’s pointed out nonetheless.

Of course mainstream media keeps rolling over for Colossal, providing uncritical hype and coverage in exchange for exclusivity and “wow.” What Colossal is doing is wrong and they can’t even deliver what they promise. How many times do we have to go over this?
Cover of TIME magazine showing a genetically-modified wolf, said to be a dire wolf but is not, with the headline “extinct” with a strikethrough, above the text “this is Remus. He’s a dire wolf. The first to exist in over 10,000 years. Endangered species could be changed forever” by Jeffrey Kluger

Dire wolves were not close relatives of gray wolves. They last shared a common ancestor more than 5 million years ago. What Colossal has done is make something new and slapped a dire wolf sticker on it, as if an organism equals a hypothetical genome.
