MFL is too long, but still a fun movie that has things to say about class and women. It’s weaker than the more inventive and memorable Mary Poppins, which also was released that year and won Julie Andrews an Oscar. It also isn’t as incisive in its commentary as Dr. Strangelove.

MFL doesn’t really sell Eliza’s transition to high class. It sort of just happens during a musical number. The plot also never challenges its endorsement for cultural erasure. Eliza moves on from her Cockney origin, and it’s never shown as being problematic. (Maybe it isn’t?)

Women also have their own agency in MFL. Eliza is defended by the women working in Higgins’ house as well as his mother. When Eliza decides to marry a rich but hapless man, it isn’t so she can be taken care of. She wants to chart her own path.

Eliza seeks out Higgins so she can lose her accent and get better work. But in becoming high class, the movie shows how Eliza loses her community when she tries returning home.

John and I liked what MFL had to say about class. When Eliza’s father Alfred is criticized for essentially selling his daughter to Higgins, he responds “You would too if you were as poor as me.”

MFL is a musical, not my favourite genre, but the songs are fun if a little long and add to the film’s nearly 3-hour runtime. “Get Me To The Church On Time” for example is funny and memorable but overstays its welcome.

MFL is essentially shot as a stage play, and the stages are excellent. Higgins’ house, the streets of London and a horse race track are wonderfully used (the latter has a great touch of actual horses running by spectators on a small set).

The movie also benefits from an all-time performance by Rex Harrison as Higgins, a confirmed bachelor (very gay coded), misogynist and extremely charming asshole with some of the movie’s best lines. (“She’s so deliciously low. She’s horribly dirty,” is a personal favourite.)

(Hepburn was controversially not nominated for Best Actress, in part because the majority of her singing was dubbed in by another singer. Hepburn apparently didn’t know this had happened until after MFL was released.)

This is a familiar plot, but only because My Fair Lady is a foundational text for movies such as She’s All That and Pretty Woman. It excels with a superb performance from Hepburn, who dances, does two accents and shows off some real comedic chops.

Audrey Hepburn plays Eliza, a poor woman with a Cockney accent who is encountered by linguist Henry Higgins. A bet is made that Higgins can make a “lady” out of Eliza, which involves changing the way she speaks.

#Lanterns was such a letdown. If there’s a second season, it would be great to see the rings get used, aliens to look like aliens, Sinestro to be a proper villain and more Lanterns show up. It felt like this series was either embarrassed by the source material or too cheap to portray it properly.
