I’ve noticed that whenever a random post of mine gets noticed over the Pond and there’s a sudden uptick of likes or reposts, there’s also a sudden flurry of blocks by random accounts. A lot of them seem to have the kind of content that would make you blush! 😹

That’s a lovely image and I hope it encourages someone to put out a shallow dish of water in their own garden or on their balcony so they can get the same pleasure from watching the birds bathe every day 😺

Morning Mushen, similar story here. Very blustery but the rain has cleared. Finally Autumn has arrived! I have a nice easy day today at work so am already mentally in the weekend 😺 Hope your day flies by too 👍

Greetings to all this #FingerPostFriday from Flädie vineyard near Malmö in Sweden, where we have two for the price of one! Nice to see they don’t want their visitors to get lost after sampling the wines 😹 I do like the traditional colour of the building (see ALT for more info)
A typically Swedish-looking house - a long, single-storey building painted a deep red, with vertical timber cladding, a dark tiled roof and white-framed windows divided into small panes. Green climbing vines cover parts of the façade, and white outdoor tables and chairs stand on the terrace in front. A black wooden signpost in the foreground points towards parking, reception, the shop and the winery, while another next to the house gives similar directions. The building stands beside a gravel drive, with grass, trees and a bright blue sky beyond.

The deep red colour is typical for traditional Swedish and Scandinavian wooden buildings. Its origins are in the copper mines of Falun, Sweden, where iron-rich mining waste was used to produce a red pigment known as Falu rödfärg. The colour was first used by wealthy households to imitate expensive brick buildings, but from the 18th and 19th centuries, the price dropped so it began to be used on farmhouses, barns and cottages. The paint was practical as well as attractive, helping to protect rough timber while allowing it to breathe. So what was initially a sign of prestige eventually became an enduring symbol of Swedish rural life.

If the forecast looks good, it's still nice until the leaves fall off (the cemetery is a wonder) but I wouldn't bother until May otherwise (unless we have loads of snow just before Xmas but that ain't happening ever!).

I agree that the EU doesn’t do it, but the UK definitely needs to consider its attitude towards, & understanding of, the institutions & aims of what has become the EU. Arrogance & exceptionalism are still very much a feature of the UKG’s approach. Some self-reflection and humility are in order.

I’m tempted to say that the UK needs to eat humble pie, but before it can even do that it needs to understand why it would have to do so. We’re not there yet.

The Kimono Gallery @roger1952.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
Traditional Okinawa dance. The kimonos here are very different than in the main Japanese islands to the north. This performance captures the distinct cultural lineage of Ryūkyū Buyō (classical Okinawan dance), a courtly art form nurtured under the sovereign Ryukyu Kingdom from the 15th thru 19th c
Poised in deliberate, fluid motion upon a sun-dappled courtyard path, a classical Ryukyuan dancer performs Yotsudake, her body draped in a radiant, golden-yellow bingata robe patterned with cascading tropical flora, waves, and cloud scrolls. She wears the iconic hanagasa—a monumental, flower-shaped headpiece constructed with overlapping crimson petals rimmed in brilliant cobalt blue wave motifs, echoing the bloom of a hibiscus or lotus floating over the sea. Unbound by the heavy, constricting obi sashes of mainland Honshu, her kimono flows with uninhibited maritime freedom, its wide sleeves lined in shocking scarlet silk that flashes with every turn of her wrists. In her hands, she clicks small, tassel-adorned bamboo castanets (yotsudake), anchoring her graceful steps in a precise, hypnotic rhythm. The scene radiates a vivid sensory atmosphere: the sharp, metallic-like clack-clack of polished bamboo echoing through warm coastal air, the gentle rustle of starch-finished silk and ramie fibers, the faint, salty tang of a Pacific breeze mingling with garden fragrance, and the dazzling intensity of southern sunlight illuminating saturated, pigment-dyed textile motifs.
ormed at the crossroads of East Asian maritime trade routes, Ryukyuan court culture synthesized artistic influences from China, Japan, and Southeast Asia to forge a unique aesthetic identity. The dance Yotsudake was historically showcased during grand state banquets (ukawansen) held at Shuri Castle to entertain visiting Chinese imperial envoys (sapposhi). The dancer’s brilliant yellow robe showcases bingata, Okinawa's premier stencil-dyeing technique where mineral pigments and plant dyes are applied over rice-paste resists; during the Ryukyu Kingdom era, rich yellow grounds were strictly reserved for the royal family and high nobility.

Our best sunrises are often in winter, when the sun comes up behind the church as I sit at my home office desk. We don’t ever see the sunset but I’ll take the sunrise!

On my recent trip to Malmö, I came across this rather splendid double door at Skomakaregatan 4, which apparently was built in 1898 and designed by Malmö architect Harald Boklund. Well done that man! Very attractive and imposing 😺 #AdoorableThursday
A large, ornate wooden double door fills the photograph. The warm golden-brown doors have rows of carved geometric patterns and small windows in their upper halves, decorated with carved wooden bars and curved shapes. They are set into a pale stone arch covered with elaborate carvings of leaves, flowers and figures. The number 4 is displayed above the door.

One good thing about the mornings getting darker is that you’re actually up to see the sunrise and if you’re lucky enough to have an easterly view, you can’t miss it! 😺
A fiery red sunrise with tinges of purple and blue in wispy clouds over the silhouettes of trees with scattered street lamps still lit in the early morning. The outline of a church spire is visible to the right of the frame.

Aggressive driving is a big problem where I live, and I’m lucky I’ve had my licence for over 30 years too, as I’ve learnt to ignore it. But as you said, when you’re learning or if you’re a bit nervous (or even in a new place) it’s absolutely unforgivable to pressure a driver that way. So dangerous.

Sources of TFA include: - PFAS-containing pesticides used on crops - F-gases used in refrigeration, air conditioning + datacentre cooling systems - pharmaceutical pollution - the breakdown of other forms of PFAS Alternatives already exist for most of these uses.

I can’t understand why people have no patience with learners. We were all learners once. It’s stressful enough trying to manage all the pedals/gears/indicators and look out for all the signs/cars/cyclists/pedestrians without some twit trying to force you into making an error.

Today it’s all the Ms with #ManholeCoverMonday from Malmö, in Sweden. The cover bears the coat of arms of Erik of Pomerania from the medieval House of Griffin that ruled Pomerania from Szczecin. Erik, born Bogusław, became king of Denmark, Norway & Sweden & ruler of the Kalmar Union. Fascinating!
A close-up of a round cast-iron manhole cover set into Malmö’s cobbled pavement. It shows Malmö’s coat of arms: a crowned griffin’s head above a shield containing another crowned griffin’s head, with “MALMÖ STAD” on either side. The arms date from 1437, when King Erik of Pomerania granted Malmö its city seal and coat of arms.A sunny cobbled square in central Malmö, with cafés and outdoor seating, historic buildings and a Malmö coat-of-arms manhole cover in the foreground. The prominent brick building behind the square reflects the elaborate architecture of Malmö’s late-19th- and early-20th-century commercial centre. The square also contains mature trees and planters for decoration.

I’m always fascinated by how people can be so easily persuaded to vote against their own interests because they somehow don’t (want to) consider themselves to be part of the group that’s affected. My brother owns a small company and is always amazed at how his staff consistently vote Tory.

Well yes and this is the thing - make sure they pay and then you can easily afford things like UBI. UBI isn’t about ‘giving something for nothing’. That money gives freedom to people to make their lives better and the money comes back into the economy.

Tycjan Chmiel @tycjanc.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
Well if you made sure everyone was paying the tax they should be paying, you could reduce tax by quite a bit but the ones who are in the best position to pay are typically paying less proportionally than most. I agree that if you closed the loopholes, there would be a lot more to go around.
100
Tycjan Chmiel @tycjanc.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
Oh dear. The government (i.e. you and every other small person like yourself) already hands out billions in subsidies to large corporations and you’re worried about the small people?
100
Tycjan Chmiel @tycjanc.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
Indeed.
000
Tycjan Chmiel @tycjanc.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
I definitely think that’s a major consideration but I also think it’s cheaper to replace the current ridiculously complicated and convoluted social security systems we have with one simple payment for all. It’s much easier to administer too. And there are no arbitrary cutoffs or exemptions.
110
Tycjan Chmiel @tycjanc.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
But people aren’t dependent on UBI. It’s just an extra for most. What would you do with $500 a month? I’d spend it. That would go back into the economy. Others would study and get better jobs. Others could pay for childcare. We’re not talking about people sitting on their arses doing nothing.
220
Tycjan Chmiel @tycjanc.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
I know what it is - I was being silly and pretending I didn’t know as I don’t personally use it, nor will I ever use it, one reason being the potential scraping of my data, as you’ve kindly explained. I’m not surprised they do this, but it’s annoying and insulting nonetheless.
000
Tycjan Chmiel @tycjanc.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
UBI says eg everyone gets €500 a month from the govt, whether they’re rich, poor, working or not. It doesn’t say who owns shops, factories or farms, what things should cost, what people should produce, or guarantee employment. It doesn’t abolish markets or private property. But the DDR did.
000
Tycjan Chmiel @tycjanc.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
No it isn’t. UBI is one policy inside an economy. The DDR’s planned economy was the economy’s operating system.
