Local squirrels have been getting walnuts somewhere and stashing them all around our yard, for the last few months. Now we have other visitors enjoying a walnut treasure hunt 🌱

I am reminded of this delightful little absurdity - specifically, the descriptions of the "performances" - from the earlier Sid Meier's Pirates! for the Commodore Amiga, released in 1990.

Me, following the manufacturers instructions to unjam the garbage disposal wondermark.com/c/523/
A comic strip, from https://wondermark.com/c/523/

The website for this comic has the sub title:

#523; In which Vince achieves Victory - June 2nd, 2009

The top-line of the strip has text on the left:

WONDERMARK by David Malki!

And on the right:

get to work at WONDERMARK.COM

(Wondermark has a distinct visual style - from its Wikipedia article: "It features 19th-century illustrations that have been recontextualized to create humorous juxtapositions.")

First panel: A man, presumably the Victory achieving Vince from the subtitle, stands, in dark clothing, and a hat that makes me think "train conductor," with his arms spread, pushing back a curtain with one hand. He is holding some kind of wrench in the other.

He stands over a woman, reclined on a bed. She seems indifferent to his presence.

Vince declares:

"Stand back!"

"I am man!"

(The written text is in all caps, but that feels a bit too shouty for the alt-text version. There's also some use of bold text for emphasis - I'll use capitals for that.)

Second panel: zooms closer on Vince. He declares:

"There was a thing wrong with a mechanical thing in our life."

"I FIGURED OUT the problem."

Third panel: Zoom even closer on Vince. Lines have appeared behind Vince's head drawing further attention to the grandeur of his declaration.

"AND I FIXED IT."

Fourth panel: We return to the framing of the first panel. The woman, unmoved (and still indifferent) replies:

"You replaced a washer in the kitchen faucet."

Vince responds: "It REQUIRED a WRENCH"

---
The linked website has an additional alt text:
"I nearly even broke a SWEAT."

Lost to time.
An original PS3, vertical, next to a 30-something cm TV (the cathode ray tube variety). The TV shows that the PS3 is booting Linux: two larger penguins representing the PPU cores of the PS3's CPU, and six smaller penguins for the SPUs.

On top of the TV are two of original PS3 controllers - one still in original packaging. The un-packaged controller sits atop two games, still wrapped: MotorStorm and Resistance: Fall of Man.

Ok, you said "train," and it reminded me of an old roll of film from my parents which I happened to see again recently: images of a train derailment in Tasmania circa 1979 - and this, not a picture of a train, but I feel like you might appreciate it anyway 🙂

I wrote a little code and tried to generate something meaningfully similar on a 9950x3d, got this. Horizontal scale changed significantly since 2007. Vertical scale, not so much :) (Not a particularly robust methodology or analysis, but the shape was remarkably consistent between runs.)

Brings to mind this series lwn.net/Articles/252... from 2007. And this chart - which is discussed in the linked text - is for a CPU with a 1MB L2 cache. If you were to run a similar test on a recent CPU, I suspect the cycles/op peak on the right of the chart would be at a fairly similar number -
