Strange, that AI search apparently missed this chart:

And I hadn't heard about dedifferentiation in this context. It must be tightly regulated because there are so many things that could go wrong as, in this paper, colon cancer.

From my amateur point of view, the AlphaFold predictions they used in the paper for the full protein are pretty wild, but most of it is IDRs so, with the exception of the zinc finger domain, it's all very low confidence (warm colors are uncertain).

I guess these "smart, well-intentioned people" never looked at the Project 2025 report, because the destructive intent is right there in the call for cuts to the indirect-cost rate. Of course, that was struck down by the Federal courts.

Following a lunch in the East Room with Big Tech billionaires Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, Mark Zuckerberg and others, the US president shut down talk of new laws to govern the sector, instead endorsing “tremendous self-regulation”.

Parading his guests in front of reporters, the president — who has consistently opposed new AI laws despite popular support for such measures — said the 20 Silicon Valley executives in attendance had agreed to a “morally binding” accord to voluntarily manage the tech’s risks.

Trump said the document was “almost like a constitution”, while House Speaker Mike Johnson, who was also at the lunch, said it committed companies to “robust internal controls and layers of internal and external review”.

AIPI had funding from Jaan Tallinn, who's a big funder of Yudkowski's MIRI. Another author (Dawn Song) had a company funded by Andreessen Horowitz/a16z. It's a shame Hinton is collaborating with these people, but I think he's now in the advanced stage of Nobel disease.

A coauthor of the report in that piece (Samuel Hammond) is employed by the Foundation for American Innovation. They participated in the Heritage Foundation's Project 2025. Another co-author is from the AI Policy Institute, whose co-founder had a crypto company funded by Thiel and Altman. 1/

None of the past dire warnings - about dime novels (the "novel-reading disease"), cinema, radio, TV, "tribal" rock-and-roll) - panned out. Maybe this time will be different, but Mulgan didn't convince me of that.

Mulgan follows a very familiar cognitive decline script : "during the last century, there were good reasons to believe that exactly these types of cognitive capacity were improving" followed by "now ... there are glaring signs of cognitive regression among people" 1/

Hard to argue that phrases like "possibly dumber humans who are easier to manipulate" and "IQ levels began to reverse" don't imply that people are becoming stupider. Of course, these ideas have a long ignoble pedigree. And the admittedly vague idea of a "cognitive defense industry" is creepy to me.

Incredible. First Secretary Mullin claimed that DHS had identified 15,903 noncitizens on Nevada’s voter roll. Then DHS officials told a skeptical Nevada, no no no, that’s just people we flagged. Here are the names of 185 people we KNOW aren’t citizens. All 185 were citizens. DHS got 100% wrong.
When the Department of Homeland Security sent Nevada a list of 185 names last month that it claimed identified noncitizens who had been improperly allowed to register to vote, state election officials got to work.
On Tuesday, the state sent a strongly worded rebuke to the federal government: Every single person on the list was a lawful citizen.
"As for the 185 individuals, our records indicate that they were citizens," Greg D. Ott, a deputy attorney general in Nevada, wrote, according to a copy of a letter sent to Department of Homeland Security officials obtained through open records requests.
"You have provided nothing of substance to suggest otherwise."Following the meeting, Ms. Vogt sent a clarifying email to Nevada officials. "I also wanted to be sure I clarified that we did not reduce the 15,903 to 185," she wrote. "We've manually reviewed some of the 15,903 and confirmed 185 are not U.S. Citizens."
Now, Nevada officials are saying even that 185 number is wrong. They also took issue with a letter D.H.S. sent them in early September, in which the agency reiterated its initial claims about nearly 16,000 noncitizens on the rolls and pressured state officials to review each case in a letter to Nevada officials in early September.

I think it's troubling that their technical report states that Claude discovered "RTs with tandem repeat arrays" while their press release calls it a "novel enzyme system". Did they verify any enzyme functionality? It seems they only verified that the array is transcribed into discrete RNAs.
