It's baffling to me that people making parts for SL Wrestling shows - or any other live performance, configure click to trigger without even the courtesy of a confirmation dialog. It's a fucking show, it fucking matters if an accidental click triggers it or can be ignored.

This afternoon I am thinking "we need a "Battle QIX" to play against each other so I can see what you've got ;)". I'm not entirely sure how that would work. I guess measure individual area captured, and perhaps allow capturing the opponent like a sparx inside a sealed area.

It is a pretty impressive 8 bit CPU - probably near the top of the line. (The apparent(?) sequel 6309 has a few more features that would be really, really nice to have on the Vectrex, mostly more registers). I wish I could have learned it back in the day, but I never found a book for CoCo asm.

(Noting that 4 lines of text, 7 pixels tall, is about 28 vectors. it has shifting hardware to manage the pixel details of the characters, but the CPU is running flat out keeping the hardware moving.)

Even if you cross-hatched the fill, that's a lot of lines (and longer lines eat more time than shorter ones). The Vectrex is so constrained that when it DOES try to do raster (which it does for text), it can only manage about 4 lines, not the whole screen. It takes most of the CPU to do it, too.

haha! QIX would be hard on the Vectrex because of the filled areas. On a traditional display, you can usually just leave stuff you've drawn up, because the video chip handles getting it to the screen. On a vector monitor, you have to redraw anything you want to see every single frame.

Yeah, when I had it back in the day I was expecting Battlezone and Star Wars, at least. But I see now how hard they would have been. The Pitrex cart shows that the vector hardware is just fast enough, if a different CPU is doing the heavy lifting, but the 6809 just can't do it all to that level.

The machine is also limited by cost cutting that runs every analog device through the same switch, so you can't do anything in parallel. An arcade game would offload the vector drawing to dedicated hardware to free up the CPU, for instance, and so have better performance.

There is a modern cart that runs emulators in the cart, and directly drives the vector hardware. It can draw more lines in a frame than the original machine since it has more horsepower to generate the endpoints, and the Vectrex itself is doing nothing BUT the lines. But there are still limits.

In /theory/, yes. In practice, kinda. ;) Bsky requires short descriptions, but you have 256 points on each axis that you can lock to, and draw infinite resolution lines from them by setting a slope to move and timing how long you move for. Count limited is how quickly the hardware can move the beam.

I've never seen a real one... told it resembles a Darth Vader mask. But it was probably hard to put much detail in the game, since you needed to render six frames in a row for a single game frame (RGB for each eye). I know that Minestorm had a 3d version and there was a roller coaster (game? sim?)

Sorry to pile on, but I'm doubly annoyed today as someone sold one of my Dragon's Lair releases for $950 USD... and told me I didn't deserve a cut because he needs the money. I was honestly joking, I don't want a cut, but the greed annoys me so much. Overreacting I guess. But I could use $950. ;)

They already had a CPU core they re-used, and they presumably wrote the rest. But it's emulating my friend's video chip and they couldn't be arsed to say so much as hello before charging so much for it. And this is the third time his work has been cloned, and it bugs me. A lot.

I may have given a slightly off impression in my annoyance... it's not so much that they literally lifted the code. They did indeed create a card, and write software to drive said card.

Actually, let me go verify it's going to be closed source first.

I enjoyed a lot of it. You've probably already been told - but find a filler list and just skip them, especially the later ones. Except for the Lightning arc, really, they add nothing of value. Given how long it is, it's worth jumping over IMO.

She's running! Lots of little glitches but it's running. Performance is an issue at the higher difficulty levels... hopefully I can get it going. The Vectrex CPU isn't slow, but it's spending a lot of time drawing vectors.

All the sprites are in (as vectors) and the player stuff at least seems to mostly work, except for Selena being too powerful for the hardware and causing some very odd crashes. I'll talk to her about that.

The concept of an intuitive UI where everything you needed to click was right in front of you, and you could figure it out mostly by clicking things - this was considered ugly and hard to regionalize, so instead we'll hide everything and you need to know the secret handshakes to use anything at all.

Starting work in September, so I won't be going anywhere for months once that starts, unfortunately. On the other hand, I should again have income which makes the hotels more bearable.
