The now iconic grizzly bear holding a shovel and wearing a straw ranger’s hat and denim jeans, was a character created by the U.S. Forest Service and the Wartime Advertising Council. Smokey’s message was for people to thoroughly put out their campfires, which were a major cause of forest fires. That message and the reason for it have not changed, making Smokey Bear the longest-running, public-service-announcement campaign in U.S. history.
