Frak! Hard mode on my own October TBR emgaged! /Rushes upstairs to grab another book and retake the 📸 for tomorrow’s reveal 😅

I’ve seen that style of immersion reading mentioned on the BookTube, though I’m not an audiobook guy so I’ve never tried it. But I do tend to read along to forced subtitles at the pace the words are spoken. So I suppose I do it automatically.

Majuular's whole series of Ultima videos is top-notch work, and I highly recommend them to anyone who cares about video game history but particularly to younger folks who care about games and game history but grew up after Ultima's heyday and don't know much about the RPG landscape of the era.

You’ve set me thinking on some characters from Liveships now too! The childish ones were kids, the rest were adult. The separation was clear and distinct and appropriate, all handled exemplarily. These books were where I realised how much I liked introspection and just taking the time to tell it.

Mostly I just roll my eyes when charaters get all touchy-feely, and I absolutely skip-to-the-end when the rumpy-pumpy commences (FTB for me, please!). But I’ve recently been thinking on how Hobb handled Fitz, and was it Molly, in the Farseer Trilogy. Now that was a relationship I was interested in.

On my first big overseas client conference, I was at a dinner seated next to a drunk client who kept trying to fondle me under the table. I was young, distressed, and had no idea what to do. I moved my legs as far away from him as I could, moving into the space of the man next to me, who then started patting my legs! The Regional Manager was a French woman who caught my eye, gestured for me to go to the bathroom and when I came back had switched chairs with me. What happed next was epic. A few minutes after I sat back down, she raised her hand with his hand captured in hers and announced loudly "Does anyone know whose hand this is? I found it in my lap." There was dead silence at the table. She threw his hand back at him and said calmly "next time I pick it up with my fork." Then she started a new conversational thread and things moved on. After the meeting she found me, gave me a hug, and said seriously "Never be afraid to make some noise. It is their shame, not yours."

Unfortunately I just cannot cope with all of the snoogins. I’ve had a whole bunch of that across a few books of late and I know it’s not for me. In fact, that’s when I typically start skim-reading until the scene’s over. Simply not interested, nothing more than that!

I was intrigued by the portal fantasy nature of it (I am unsure if that’s the appropriate term as little experience here), less so the jumping around from scene to scene (the movie reference I made related to that aspect), and loved the timey-wimey bits (which had me pausing to puzzle it out).

The “ponderous or heavy prose style” immediately drew my mind to Stephen (R) Donaldson. I can think of another whom I read in my ‘yoof’ that would *absolutely* fit this bill, but I’m being deliberately vague because 😬🫣 now. You’re spot on with m SF lean, as I’d got fed up with some Norse stuff!

Discoverability for new SFF books seems way down these days, especially outside of bestsellers and certain subgenres. I'm noticing this as both a reader and a writer. Great stuff is in danger of sinking without a trace. Please post about new/recent books you love or are excited for!!! I'll start:

I started gardening in 2016 but decided in 2019 to level up, discovering GardeningTube in 2020. A dead book channel resurrected itself briefly into my YT subscriptions, before I even knew what BookTube was. YT suggested a few channels during 2020 which erupted EoY when I properly uncorked BookTube
