With the recent threats against the sovereignty of Canada, I was thinking we should make a list of things that make Canada something that we want to maintain. For you, what makes Canadian sovereignty worth fighting for? Or, what is it about Canada that really MATTERS to Canadians?

I decided I wanted to be angry again this morning and looked at the 2020-21 budget. If the proportion of provincial spending had stayed the same as it was 6 years ago (0.3%), then the budget for museums and libraries would increase by more than $20M. That would be a 56.3% increase.

NS spends less than 0.25% of the budget on libraries & museums. About half is for libraries If the political will existed, they could easily double the funding for public libraries and it would be less than a rounding error against the total budget while creating HUGE benefits to our communities.

This is terrible news! We should be increasing the scope of library services, not closing branches.

It's super frustrating to have my field of professional expertise be a topic that the average internet commenter has very strong opinions on. Especially since the vast majority of them have no idea what they're talking about.

I know that it's generally a bad idea to prioritize the comfort of other people over your own well being, but sometimes it's Christmas Eve and your whole house has the flu, and someone needs to make sure Christmas still happens.

Having a son in 5th grade is wild. He'll come home from school saying shit he clearly heard in the school yard, but which he DEFINITELY doesn't understand, because if he knew what those words meant, he would absolutely not say that shit within earshot of his parents.

I'm seeing more and more reports of fires being set intentionally in NS, but not one mention of the potential (or likely, even) connection between that behaviour and far-right accelerationists. Not saying it's definitely related but it certainly does fit the description.

For years now, I've been wondering how so-called sustainable fuels were able to claim such large reductions over traditional fossil fuels, even though they are still being burnt and releasing carbon into the atmosphere, and now I see it is due to some bullshit, backwards-ass, liars' logic.
Screenshot of text that reads, "In the case of SAF made with biomass, the carbon dioxide these plants absorb during their growth phase is roughly equivalent to the amount produced when the fuel is used, according to IATA. This would make the SAF carbon neutral, but there are some emissions released during the SAF production process because of the energy needed to transport raw materials and refine the fuel."

I'm getting really sick of the Fraser Institute being pushed as supposedly useful information Today it's that the wealthiest 20% of Canadians pay 57% of taxes. Coincidentally, StatsCan, earlier this week showed that the top 20% owns 65% of wealth Record inequality and continuing to worsen

Just a reminder that your local library has more than books! Many also have dvds, cds, board games, video game systems, internet hot spots, streaming services, computers, ebooks, audio books, park passes, museum passes, passport services and so much more! Maybe it's time for a visit 📚❤️

I love libraries because, in a world overrun with the commodification and financialization of existence and experience, they stand as examples of the greatness that humans can achieve without the requirement of a profit And what they currently provide is just a sliver of their potential

I love libraries because they provide a space for people to exist without having to spend money. And it's so much more than just a space to exist. Libraries are overflowing with beneficial possibilities.

I love libraries because they present a proven way that communities can benefit from a sharing model of ownership. It works for books and other forms of media, as well as tools, kitchen utensils, and more. The library model of ownership could (and should, IMO) be expanded to cover everything!

I see a lot of people seemingly more engaged in electoral politics than ever, and understandably so. The world is intense right now, and elections have consequences. I'm concerned, though, that many will be happy enough with the result that they go back to life as usual, when (if) their team wins.
