Tim @ttopp.bsky.social · 24/08/2026With the recent threats against the sovereignty of Canada, I was thinking we should make a list of things that make Canada something that we want to maintain. For you, what makes Canadian sovereignty worth fighting for? Or, what is it about Canada that really MATTERS to Canadians? 000

Tim @ttopp.bsky.social · 04/06/2026Depends on how local they are to me. Generally, I would just say the community name, but if they live in the same, or a neighbouring, community, I'll tell them which subdivision I'm in. 000
Tim @ttopp.bsky.social · 04/06/2026Funded staff (FTEs) have also gone from 146.6 to 113.6, over that same period. 000
Tim @ttopp.bsky.social · 04/06/2026I decided I wanted to be angry again this morning and looked at the 2020-21 budget. If the proportion of provincial spending had stayed the same as it was 6 years ago (0.3%), then the budget for museums and libraries would increase by more than $20M. That would be a 56.3% increase. 142
Tim @ttopp.bsky.social · 03/06/2026Public libraries are one of the MOST beneficial public services and they provide an amazing return on investment. Unfortunately for us, that "return" is purely social (i.e. makes people's lives better), and our current leaders only seem to care about padding the pockets of private business owners. 02812
Tim @ttopp.bsky.social · 03/06/2026Cuts to library services are NEVER about budget savings, and are 100% ideological, aimed at reducing the access to information, and other wonderful benefits public libraries provide to communities. 13412
Tim @ttopp.bsky.social · 03/06/2026NS spends less than 0.25% of the budget on libraries & museums. About half is for libraries If the political will existed, they could easily double the funding for public libraries and it would be less than a rounding error against the total budget while creating HUGE benefits to our communities. 25128

Tim @ttopp.bsky.social · 02/06/2026Does this exclude Cunard street since it's used by way more than just the residents there? 110
Tim @ttopp.bsky.social · 02/06/2026This is terrible news! We should be increasing the scope of library services, not closing branches. 000
Tim @ttopp.bsky.social · 15/04/2026It's not for drivers, it's for corporations. Corporations don't require housing or groceries but they do require fuel, and lots of it. Selling it as being for drivers is using the same logic as the idea that tax cuts are beneficial to average workers. 061
Tim @ttopp.bsky.social · 01/04/2026And it doesn't help that most reporting on the subject (with a couple notable exceptions) is also misinformed. And even the people whose job is (supposedly) is to inform people on the subject, are ALSO presenting false and misleading info on it. 020
Tim @ttopp.bsky.social · 01/04/2026It's super frustrating to have my field of professional expertise be a topic that the average internet commenter has very strong opinions on. Especially since the vast majority of them have no idea what they're talking about. 120

Tim @ttopp.bsky.social · 18/03/2026I was just thinking the same thing. The number of interactions required to appear significant on local issues would be very cheap to acquire for someone interested in swaying perception of public opinion. 031
Tim @ttopp.bsky.social · 18/03/2026I would say that assuming he's so naive is giving him too much credit. 010
Tim @ttopp.bsky.social · 18/03/2026It's a ruse. He just pretends it's the FB groups, when it's actually lobbying from developers and landlords. Gives a good cover for pushing the chosen narratives. 230

Tim @ttopp.bsky.social · 01/03/2026I really enjoyed 2 Crows' approach to making wildly hoppy beers (Space Words triple IPA was an amazing beer), but I'm not surprised that the wider market wasn't enough to support that model. Sad to see them go. 100

Tim @ttopp.bsky.social · 07/02/2026I would agree that bad land use planning is responsible for overextended and underfunded municipal services, and the associated fiscal unsustainability, but the housing crisis is caused primarily by the financialization of housing, which municipal govs have little to no impact on. 110
