Can musical emotional expression be grasped teleosemantically? The struggle continues—now with my first grant from Poland’s National Science Centre: “Proper Function and Musical Meaning: Preliminary Research toward a Teleosemantic Model of Musical Expression” (Sept 2026–Sept 2027).

The authors have now responded to our critique. Basically, they say that because humans don't always agree on the same beat, the two macaques don't have to agree with humans, or with each other, or even with themselves, to count as evidence of beat synchronization. www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...
it is common for listeners to synchronize to the backbeat (weak beats) instead of the downbeat (strong beats), e.g. in Henry Mancini’s “Pink Panther” theme song. If two listeners (or two parts of the same listener’s body) were found to be moving in antiphase while remaining internally consistent, would it really be true that only one is “truly tapping to the subjective beat” while the other is merely “reacting to some salient rhythmic feature”?

Had the privilege of being asked to write a Preface to a new Ukrainian edition on John Stuart Mill *On Liberty*. Here's my final paragraph (pre-translation!).
In the post-Soviet period Ukraine had the challenge of working out what type of country it wanted to be. But of course, no country speaks with one voice; some people will look to the liberties – real or imagined – of other places. Others will look to religion. Others may be nostalgic for the routines and predictability of the past. John Stuart Mill should be read as urging tolerance towards all ways of life, provided they do not inflict their values on others. No one should be forced into anything, but people should be encouraged to observe the experiments of living of others. As we saw, one centrepiece of Mill’s doctrine is freedom of thought and discussion, and the importance of listening to views that are different from your own, and not shutting out opposition, but taking it seriously and using it as a way of reflecting on one’s own views and values. This can be very hard, and sometimes emotionally very difficult. And, it is often said, truth is the first casualty of war, and it is true that different considerations apply when national security is at stake. But let us look forward to a time when the war is over and the people of Ukraine can concentrate on the question of how they want the future to be. Freedom of thought and discussion will be vital to making progress worth having. John Stuart Mill does not lay out a blueprint for the future, but even after all the time has passed since he wrote, he still speaks with a wisdom that can help light the path.
