modernity has its upsides

"n.b.d."
8-panel comic, ink and colored pencil, 20x12cm
panel 1: miss zuri, an iranian trans woman and teacher, overhears her students talking about how one of them is going by they/them pronouns
panel 2: miss z asks if the student is nonbinary, to which they enthusiastically reply in the affirmative
panel 3: another student asks what that means, and miss z says it means they're not a boy or a girl
panel 4: the student is confused, and miss z explains it's perfectly natural
panel 5: the student exclaims, "wait, does that mean there's gay animals?!" miss z says yes
panel 6: the nonbinary student asks if there are nonbinary animals, and miss z says kind of
panel 7: a third student asks if there are trans animals, and miss z says there are, like clownfish
panel 8: the third student says they wish miss z was their teacher last year, since they did a report on clownfish and wish they had known that

I've been making changes in my personal life that I haven't spoken very publicly on, but one thing I do want to be public is that my close friends call me Bea now. And if any of you want to call me Bea or B, that would make me very happy. <3 But no pressure, I won't be upset if I hear Martin.

"nujoshi"
6-panel comic, ink and colored pencil, 15x12cm
panel 1: miss zuri, an iranian trans woman and teacher, stands outside as a young student of hers runs up to her brandishing a piece of paper, saying, "miss z! miss z! do you wanna see this new drawing i made?" miss z responds, "sure, always!"
panel 2: we see miss z hold a drawing of two boys. the student explains, "look, i drew nate and william sitting in a tree, holding hands!" miss z says, "aww, that's sweet!" the student clarifies, "yeah, nate said he didn't like it, though. he thinks it makes him look gay."
panel 3: miss z looks unsure as she hands back the drawing and says, "oh... that's... not nice of him." her student says, "well, i DO ship them."
panel 4: miss z is dumbfounded
panel 5: miss z composes herself
panel 6: miss z explains, "ok. so. real people are not fictional characters. you need to get their consent to ship them. so you shouldn't ship real people. especially not your classmates."

wasn't the best january, i'll say that much

"confusion"
5-panel comic, ink and colored pencil, 15x12cm
panel 1: caption: "january '26." miss zuri, an iranian trans woman and teacher, is sitting glumly at a table in the staff lounge. her coworker, an older white woman labeled, "token conservative on staff (actually nice to me and doesn't misgender me for whatever reason)" asks her, "how are you, miss z?" she responds, "not too good..."
panel 2: miss z goes on, "it's just... the news has got me down, you know? what with the killings..." in her thought bubble are several newspapers detailing the massacres in iran
panel 3: the coworker says, "oh yeah, but you gotta be careful. you never know what's real or not now. there's a lotta fake stuff out there!"
panel 4: clearly confused, miss z haltingly says, "wh-- i don't-- what do you--" as she imagines her coworker in a chador spouting iranian regime propaganda
panel 5: suddenly miss z realizes and says, "oh. oh! uh, sure." as she imagines her coworker commenting under an article about the ice shootings in minneapolis, expressing doubt as to the veracity of actual events.

originally posted in early january after the state-sponsored murders in minneapolis, i deleted this for fear it might be too heavy. six months on, after countless more state-sponsored murders both here and back in iran, it doesn't really compare to the reality we now live in...

"bullets"
four-panel comic, ink and colored pencil
panel 1: an iranian teenage boy marches arm-in-arm with grown men in a crowd of angry protestors. caption: when my father was 16, he marched against the government. everyone was furious. the secret police had been kidnapping and murdering people.
panel 2: a man who'd linked arms with the boys is shot in the head. the boy, wide-eyed with shock, begins to be dragged to the ground by the man's dead weight. caption: suddenly and without warning, the cops opened fire. a man who'd linked arms with my father was shot right between the eyes. he was dead before he hit the ground.
panel 3: the boy stares downwards in abject horror, blood staining his face and shirt. caption: if that bullet had been a little off, it would have killed my father. that could have been him. by extension, it could've been me.
panel 4: the author, an iranian trans woman, stares blankly and teary-eyed into space as electronic reports of protests and murders in iran and minneapolis fill up the background. caption: i've been thinking about that a lot lately.

ink and colored pencil cartoon of zala zuri, an iranian trans woman, dressed in a cascadian flag bikini and triumphantly holding aloft a bloody zulfiqar (forked scimitar) in one hand and the decapitated head of a klansman in the other. she is cheerfully shouting, "!مرگ بر فاشیسم" (marg bar fashism, death to fascism in farsi). beside her is a pile of skulls with the headwear of various fascist movements, topped with a crowned skull on a spike.

panel 2: a dumbfounded miss zuri turns to look at the intruder
panel 3: an increasingly-incensed miss z gets closer to the increasingly-nervous person
panel 4: eyes narrowed, fist shaking, miss z intonates, "NO, but now i've half a mind to try hitting YOU..."

"normal"
3-panel comic, ink and colored pencil, 15x6cm
panel 1: zala zuri, an iranian trans woman and teacher, stands in front of a whiteboard and announces, "alright chat, listen up! it's time for health class, and you know what that means!" her class responds, "what?" "uh oh" "i don't!" "i do!" she ends the guessing with, "time for anonymous questions!" the class reacts, "yayy" "nooo" "oboy"
panel 2: miss zuri reads off an index card, "'dear miss z: for my whole life, but especially lately, i've been feeling like i'm not a girl, but i'm also not a boy, either. is this normal?'"
panel 3: teary-eyed and grinning, miss zuri answers triumphantly as the nonbinary flag waves in the background and purple and gold fireworks go off, "yes! yes, it is! it is completely normal and natural, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise!" some students react, "woahh" "cool"

"fourth estate sale"
4-panel comic, ink and colored pencil, 10x12cm
panel 1: zala zuri, an iranian trans woman and teacher, is driving in her car and listening to the radio. she looks somewhat exasperated as the radio announcer says, "democrats and a few senate republicans have pushed back against the president's latest pick for interim secretary of the department of secretaries, howe offal, claiming there is no evidence of him having any job experience in any field, ever."
panel 2: miss zuri looks saddened and upset as the radio continues, "in iran, the 12th ceasefire this week looks to have an uncertain future after u.s. airstrikes this morning allegedly targeted 3 hospice centers and a petting zoo with what iran claims were white phosphorus munitions. the president had this to say:"
panel 3: miss z looks repulsed and nauseated as the radio plays a clip of the president saying, "those dumb camel jockeys had better cut the crap, or else i'm gonna devour and masticate their children and flay their elders alive. or maybe i'll just give their army $12 billion, who knows? i don't. i'm bored now. let's talk about my ballroom."
panel 4: miss z looks completely exasperated as the radio announcer says, "sponsored by funopticon ai. funopticon: because everyone needs a thinking buddy! and by the biff gatezos foundation: ensuring dignified treatment for people of wealth everywhere! you're listening to npr."
