Universal Credit doesn't know the price of a pint of milk. Or a weekly food shop. Or a heating bill. Leaving millions without enough to survive and forced to turn to food banks. 🫸 The UK gov has the chance to change this. We're calling for Universal Credit to be set based on actual living costs.

Food banks haven’t always been needed in the UK. Yet our community of food banks now provide millions of emergency food parcels a year. This isn’t right. In ‘A Taste for Change’, our Social Change Advisor asks: how do we build a food bank free future?

⏰ Just a few days left to support the Morrisons Food Drive! There's still time to donate at Morrisons stores before the collection ends on 20 September. Every donation helps our food bank provide vital support to people facing hunger and hardship. Thank you for your support 💚

The UK government promised to end the need for emergency food. 📣 So we spoke to MPs about how they can act to end hunger. People are turning to food banks due to rising living costs, unaffordable housing, and a lack of support from social security. These are all things that we can fix. 💚

💚 A reminder that the Waitrose Food Drive is running all week until 12 September. Whether it's tinned food, pasta or toiletries, every donation helps people in our community access the support they need. A huge thank you to everyone who has donated already 🛒

It’s #NationalFoodbankDay today but 26 years ago there was no food bank day because there were no food banks. Now, because of the cost of living and our poor social security system there’s more than 1,400.

Universal Credit does not cover the cost of essentials. That means PIP has become part of the UK's anti-poverty infrastructure. What does that mean for security reforms and how do we build a sustainable system that better protects disabled people from hardship? 👇 www.trussell.org.uk/news-and-res...

Financial hardship delaying major life milestones for young people | Trussell

❗ Young people can't afford to live. Our research found that a third of 16-25-year-olds cut back on food in the last 3 months. Young people should be thinking about next steps in their lives, like moving out or learning to drive, but they can barely even afford to get by.
A young man opens a kitchen cupboard and looks inside. There isn't much in the cupboard. A headline on top reads: 'Breaking news: one in three young people cut back on food in the last 3 months, report finds'

Shockingly, some young people are even cutting back on food and turning to food banks. 240,000 emergency food parcels were provided to 17-24 year olds last year. That’s 53% more than in 2019. And 1 in 6 young people are skipping meals to afford travel to education or work.

Universal Credit isn't covering the cost of essentials. Millions of people are being forced to rely on food banks as a result. Support should be decided by independent experts and real costs - just like Minimum Wage. It's time for change so everyone can afford the essentials.

Universal Credit doesn't cover life's essentials. And millions of people are being forced to turn to a food bank as a result. How much money people have to live on should reflect real costs, not party-political interests. ❗It's time to take the politics out of Universal Credit.

We're calling on the UK Government to establish an independent process for setting Universal Credit. One that looks food, heating, travel and essential costs, and makes sure the support people receive matches real life. Everyone deserves support that knows what things cost.

Universal Credit doesn't know the price of a pint of milk. Or your heating bill. Or school shoes. That's not a joke - the amount of support we receive when we need it was never calculated against what essentials actually cost. But we have a chance to change that. 💚

It's not right that people are having to turn to food banks just to survive. But together, we can change this. 💚
A pie chart titled "Why people actually need food banks" lists the following reasons: Job losses and redundancy, not enough income for essentials, rising housing costs, insecure work, unable to work due to disabilities or caring responsibilities, not getting enough support from social security, facing unexpected life events like illness or a death in the family, and experiencing domestic abuse. The chart has a dark green background.

Let's tackle a common misconception: lots of people on Universal Credit have jobs. Bills are rising, rents are sky-high, food prices are by 37% - and wages don't stretch to cover it all nowadays. Even with a Universal Credit top up, people still can't afford everything they need to live.
0188
Trussell @trusselluk.bsky.social · 18/06/2026
75% of people already turning to food banks are disabled. We hear directly from people how hard they're finding covering the cost of essentials as well as the cost of being disabled. Welfare reform needs to make sure disabled people can get compassionate support that actually provides security. 💚
0157
Trussell @trusselluk.bsky.social · 18/06/2026
📢 Let's be clear... Cutting social security support for disabled people would only make hardship and heath worse. And make it harder for people to get jobs.

In the last 5 years... - Energy bills have shot up by 54% - Food prices are up by 39% But wages? Just 36%. And Universal Credit has risen by only 31%. Costs are rising so much faster than incomes. THIS is why people are struggling to survive right now. 💔

The UK government must act by improving employment support, helping young people overcome real barriers and to navigate a changing labour market. And ensure social security truly supports them when they need it.

Milburn’s interim report released today reflects exactly what we hear from young people. Sky-high rents, low incomes from wages and social security, and a lack of mental health support are pushing young people to food banks - and making it even harder for them to access work or training.

Trussell @trusselluk.bsky.social · 28/05/2026

🚨 NEW: The #KingsSpeech mentioned change – but with global issues driving up the cost of food and bills, more must be done to support people on the lowest incomes. 2.6 million food parcels were provided last year. Without more action, we risk even more people being forced to turn to a food bank.
