We measure power consumption as 'scope 2' - ie, the power station down the road ramping up to meet the data centre's consumption. We should do the same for water consumption!
“There has been much less attention to this indirect water usage, even though that oftentimes is significantly higher than the direct water usage and has impacts on watersheds and regional water resources,” said Shaolei Ren, a professor at the University of California at Riverside who studies data center water consumption.
At Meta Platforms Inc., one of the only developers to publicly divulge indirect water consumption, such use accounted for about 96% of the 21 billion gallons (80 billion liters) of water the company consumed in 2024 — nearly a 120% increase from 2021 — according to its latest sustainability report.
The remaining 4% was used on site, mostly at data centers, which also account for nearly all of Meta’s electricity consumption. “Transparency is a key pillar of Meta’s water stewardship program,” a spokesperson said in an email.

Data centre developers are trying to insert their projects into small towns or wherever they can, and as quietly as they can, because they know if the locals find out they will fight back. They fight back because these projects are without regulation, over scaled and environmentally atrocious.

"Tim and Jessica both say that he was harsher about female councillors, and on occasion, that they heard Bradford use the word “bitch” to describe them." This is a portrait of a personality disorder. If he ends up as our mayor, these will be more lost and damaging years for Toronto. #ToPoli
Jessica says that Bradford “couldn’t talk to certain staff without being really belligerent, yelling or screaming at them.” It wasn’t uncommon, she adds, for staff to cry during or after these encounters. Sometimes, to some people, he would apologize, she says, but his actions did not meaningfully change in the time she worked for him.

“Brad kind of created an environment of fear where he yelled and swore a lot at staff, and would throw mini-tantrums if he didn’t feel like he was getting what he needed,” says Tim, describing some of the incidents as akin to “verbal abuse”.

A former staffer who declined to be quoted for this story described having the same experience working under the councillor—that he would lose his temper easily, yell and swear, and, they feel, fail to conduct himself as an employer should.

It depends on the size of your house, what kind of backup power you want, what kind of system you have now, etc. There are different kinds of heat pumps, so they kind of have to do a home visit. But definitely quite a bit more than for a gas furnace. With this rebate it might be about the same.
