#Octember Oct 2 #WriteSky #WritingCommunity Ethan/Ambrose/Gabrielle are undead Kobolds. Ambrose on the bottom, Ethan middle, Gabrielle top. They'll "lend a hand" as long as no limbs fall off. 🧟 They're going to a zombie rave in Salem MA where they keep the rednecks at bay and compete with witches.

#FantasyIndiesSpooktober Oct 2 I highly recommend WIDOW'S BAY on Apple TV. It's a horror comedy that walked away with most of the Emmys for comedy. It was also filmed where I live in MA! Wanna go to a Widow's Bay party in May, 2027? Watch my BlueSky page for more info as the date approaches!

#FantasyIndiesSpooktober Oct 1 - I'm Trish Wilson, horror writer. Book: TRAILER TRASH ZOMBIES. Ethan Harris is the undead living in a rundown apt. complex. He works making websites for sex toys companies. He's grateful when the dishwasher doesn't break down and when he has enough money for rent.

#Octember Oct 1 My MC Ethan Harris in TRAILER TRASH ZOMBIES works creating web sites for sex toys companies. Sex sells. His boss would be a poltergeist. The noise it makes rivals the noise from his junkie upstairs neighbors. He's relieved when it's supernatural and not his washer breaking down.

#HorrorWritersChat I have already done this with DREADFUL DISSONANCE. Blasphemous musical instruments pitch so high most people can't hear the music but they feel it in their solar plexus. The instruments feel warm to the touch and you have to put that flute in your mouth! Ew!

#HorrorWritersChat So hard to choose only one! I'd go with Lustmord's The Place Where The Black Stars Hang paired with F. W. Murnau's 1922 classic NOSFERATU. Of interest: the original title is NOSFERATU: A SYMPHONY OF HORROR. Here's Lustmord: www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Gkm...

#HorrorWritersChat I don't use real music since I can't afford to pay a royalty fee. I've referred to musical styles but not specific songs or artists. That said, my short story DREADFUL DISSONANCE includes blasphemous musical instruments that pitch so high only a select few can hear the music.

#Sustember Sept 29 Rappaccini's Daughter by Nathaniel Hawthorne - Man falls in love with next door neighbor & her lovely garden. She's not what he thinks she is. The Interlopers by Saki - Two warring enemies are trapped beneath a tree, forcing them to talk and make amends. Then the shock comes.

#Sustember Sept 27 (I'm doing these out of order) Tips: 1. The shorter the sentence the more intense the anxiety becomes. 2. Show, don't tell. Exposition drags the pace to a halt. 3. Use all the senses. 4. Have plenty of action to keep the tension going.

#Sustember Sept 28 My favorite writer is Edgar Allan Poe. I grew up in Baltimore where he died. You don't live in Baltimore & not know about Poe. 😸 I visited his grave and home. Big fan. Poe builds suspense until you can barely take it. His endings always leave you in awe. The man was a master.

#WeeknightWriters A3: Widow's Bay! I'm psyched! I finally feel less lost since retiring. We went to a Renaissance festival last Saturday. Fun! We're going to a scale model event and a fall fair this weekend. Fair is held in the Rebecca Nurse homestead. She was hanged during the Salem witch trials.

#Sustember Sept 24 I write horror. I use cliffhangers like a fractal. Chapters & paragraphs within chapters with scene changes will end with either a shock or a cliffhanger so you can't resist turning the page to the next chapter. I don't end stories with cliffhangers. That's cruel to the reader.

#HorrorWritersChat Edgar Allan Poe. We'd gossip about Rufus Griswold, his literary rival who lied about his life. We'd also drink his family's egg nog recipe since the holidays approach. I grew up in Baltimore where he died. Been to his grave and house. He's my favorite writer of all time.

#HorrorWritersChat My real ideal horror panel is the one I was on when I met my husband who was in the audience. 💖 Panel: Your novel/short story has been turned into a hit movie/TV show. How much hair do you pull out when you see how much the show runners changed the plot and characters?

#HorrorWritersChat: I'm Trish Wilson & I write quiet horror & horror comedy. My pitch: Lizzie Borden took an axe... Today, the house is a bed & breakfast with ghost tours. Does Lizzie haunt the house? Who is the child who appears in the attic? There were no children in the Borden house...

#Sustember Sept 23 - in LIKE A BREATH OF OCEAN BLUE, I set the scene by describing the female MC's love interest in terms of flowing water and sensuality. The suspense comes from whether or not the woman my MC adores likes her in return. This story is erotic romance. Excerpt below with alt.txt.
From LIKE A BREATH OF OCEAN BLUE, which appears in BEST LESBIAN ROMANCE OF THE YEAR 2015.

Malena, her name was like an elixir on my lips. Ma - le - na. An orgasm in my mouth. Like a breath of ocean blue, she caught me in the pull of her riptide. Malena, whose hair fell down her back like dark rain during a midnight storm. Her sun-kissed skin glowed the colour of the coffee and cream I sipped every morning. I admired her body from afar; a swell of broad hips that kissed her waist the way I wanted to; shoulders broad enough for me to rest my head upon; breasts so full I could get lost in all that delicious cleavage.

#Sustember Sept 22 - I like subtle foreshadowing, but I also like foreshadowing that is so obvious it's like a kick in the teeth. I write horror. Foreshadowing is a great way to build tension. My horror comedy TRAILER TRASH ZOMBIES is a case in point. Excerpt below in alt.txt with pic.
Excerpt from my horror comedy TRAILER TRASH ZOMBIES. Two maintenance works show apartment resident and zombie Kevin trash in neighbor Gabrielle's car that must have been there for days. Things do not look good for her, but you don't yet know how bad things have become.

-----

I leaned in a bit closer to the window. Fat black green-bottle flies flew around inside the car. How long had this trash been in there? I saw corn husks and open, emptied cans of dog food through the clear plastic. I leaned against the window until my nose touched the glass. A few cardboard containers of Chinese food lay open in the trash bag, and I saw uneaten rice in one of the containers.

The rice moved. Could I jump backwards without betraying my cool, calm exterior?

"Shit, there are 𝘮𝘢𝘨𝘨𝘰𝘵𝘴 in there!!! How long has this bag been in the car?"

"Close to a week," Corey laughed, amused by my being grossed out over trash that was more alive than I was. "There are other bags in the back of the car. In this heat those plastic trash bags act like incubators. They blow right up with gas and there are maggots and flies in all the bags. There's no telling what else has been growing in there all week."

"What does Gabrielle have to say about it?"

"That the thing. We don't know," Corey said. "We haven't heard a peep from her in a week."

#Sustember Sept 21 - I love red herrings! They're in nearly all my work. Here's an example from my story THE HOUSE NEXT DOOR, my take on the Lizzie Borden case. The house is supposedly haunted. Read my snippet in alt.txt with the book cover picture. Enjoy!
Snippet from THE HOUSE NEXT DOOR. The MC saw what may be the ghost of a child on the third floor of the Borden house, but to her knowledge the Bordens did not have children other than Lizzie and her sister, Emma. They grew up before the Bordens were murdered. She also saw an odd figure of a woman from a window in the house next to the Borden house. So, who is haunting the Borden house? The clue is so subtle you may miss it.

"You need to calm down before you leave. I'll stay with you." For the first time, Amelia noticed the woman spoke with a faint Irish lilt. "Nothing can hurt you here. I can explain everything."

"Well, I heard this house is haunted."

She smiled. "It is."

"All the more reason for me to leave," Amelia said. The woman was so good-natured she had a calming effect on Amelia. Her racing heart slowed as tension left her body. She took a few deep breaths and spoke. "Who was that? I know Lizzie, Andrew, and Abby haunt this place, but I saw that woman and I saw a little girl. It looked like she was dressed to go to bed."

#Sustember Sept 20 I set my short horror story FOG OVER MONS during WWI. It's based upon the Angels of Mons legend, in which German forces were pushed back by the British due to the appearance of phantom bowmen from the sky during the Battle at Mons. I liked researching WWI history for this story.

#Sustember Sept 19 This snippet is from my horror story "Dreadful Dissonance", which is about a musician playing cursed instruments. When the pitch is so high humans can't hear it, animals attack. Snippet is attached to the book cover image. Enjoy!
From DREADFUL DISSONANCE, a horror story.

Breath burst from my mouth in a cloud of vapor. Why had the temperature dropped? I shivered, partly from the cold but mostly from terror. There was no turning back. I sat on my chair, fingers poised over yellowed keys, and waited. What would those keys feel like once I touched them? Would they numb my hands again? Would I feel pain jolt each finger through to my wrist, much like the Little Mermaid felt stabbing agony with each furtive footstep? Once I pressed those keys the music would wreak havoc. It would silence the audience in a snap. Heads would turn towards me. People would stop chattering mid-sentence. Chewing food and slurping drink would cease. I felt the power of these instruments and although I knew they would fight me, I needed to control them.

#WomenWritersNet A5: I was a feminist political activist who wrote essays and fiction. I'd sometimes imagine what the world would look like if, say, we had universal health care in the U. S. I'd write a story with that in mind. My PARENT 1 and PARENT 2 idea came from the work of activists.

#WomenWritersNet A4: Unexpected current events that happen after I've written my story can screw it up. Example: having characters in the future visit the Rose Garden or the east wing of the White House - unless I do that for a good reason. Alternate timeline or universe comes to mind.
