A handful of us gathered for a casual coffee date this morning. We're talking once again - and more seriously this time! - about starting up a TTRPG. Probably one-shots to begin with.

It's remarkable to come out of the Somme, after losing your best friends to a world-shattering war, and write a theodicy like the Music of the Ainur. The creation of the world, the Fall of Gondolin, and the transmission-narrative of the Cottage of Lost Play, all in 1917. One hell of an opening trio.

This was a fantastic talk. Highlights for me were the points about Frodo's (dis)ability experience fluctuating along a spectrum & gaining a new axis during his time in Lothlórien/Faërie, & the connection to recovery in On Fairy-Stories (esp the quotes about color). Thanks, @clarelmoore.bsky.social!

Also, they do still die - I'm not sure that we should just skip over the trauma involved in dying a gruesome death just because they have the potential to be reembodied later. In some ways, their suffering is greater because there is no escape from it until the end of the earth.

21st read of 2025: Cities and Strongholds of Middle-earth (ed. Cami Agan) Reviewing for a journal so I won't say too much, but it was good to read essays a topic that doesn't get enough play in Tolkien criticism. We all know JRRT loved nature, but he didn't hate all cities—just, you know, bad ones.
The book Cities and Strongholds of Middle-earth: Essays on the Habitations of Tolkien's Legendarium, edited by Cami D. Agan. The cover depicts a city grid viewed from overhead; in the background of the photo is a coffee shop full of tables, couches, and a decorative plant.

Book Aragorn has grown on me over time (especially with more familiarity with the historical influences), but I still agree with you - his entitlement is sometimes extremely uncomfortable as a modern reader, and the "reluctant hero" angle they used in the films is much more likable.

His letters also make it clear how frustrating he found it when people would repeatedly check it out of the library rather than buying a copy, and he doggedly pursued the money he was owed from Ace Books. (I don't disagree with your conclusion re: artists, only the claims about Tolkien's finances.)

Hmm. Tolkien's letters often show him taking on extra academic work because he needed the money to support his family. That is also why he entertained requests to purchase film rights to the books. We have had discussions around how much more he may have written if not for these constraints/burdens.
