Coincidentally, look what I just unearthed and am packing for giveaway at nctm Denver! (And also kicking myself that I did not unearth in time for Atlanta last year)

Look out! Toilet paper math just leveled up!
An enormous toilet paper package labeled “Forever Roll Go up to one month before changing your roll”. The fine print states that there are three rolls per pack and 1700 two-ply sheets per roll. A shelf label indicates that the pack costs 33.49 and there seems to be a unit price of 1.97 but the unit is tiny and illegible to my aging eyes

A yard-stick-like ruler lies on a wooden table with the unit “ducks” stated, and labeled marks at 1,2…up to 12.

The whole time I was reading this bizarrely fawning piece, I was wondering what happened to this version of SK's chatbot, from Chalkbeat a month ago. www.chalkbeat.org/2026/04/09/s...
Khan’s comments are an acknowledgement that AI has not quickly allowed for the creation of an effective super-tutor, as some initially hoped. It’s an early indication of the limits of AI to drive massive learning gains, long an unrealized goal of various technologies. While Khan remains optimistic about various uses of AI in education, he’s also come to see its limits.

Argh! THIS! This is the fantasy we are meant to believe every time!
Still, there were moments when the model forgot who it was, or hallucinated with so much swagger that it took several steps before anyone noticed. "The weird thing about the model is that you'll be disappointed for a long time until you're not," Ms. Shieh said.
"I've seen that curve several times, and it's still surprising to me."

Here's an example.
13.2: Liters, Meters, and Hours
There is a list of 12 questions such as "How much is 50% of 10 liters of milk?" and "How far is 10% of a 2000 kilometer trip?" There is a diagram at the right with three equal-sized rectangular bars; one of top of the other. The top two are labled "10" and "2,000", the bottom one is partitioned into two equal lengths. One of these is labeled with a question mark and spanned with the label "50%".

There is a description above the questions and diagrams: "This is a 5-minute warm-up activity where students work in groups to identify the percentage of a diagram that's shaded, covering a single question. The activity builds on decimals understanding (4.NF.B) and leads towards mastering percentages (6.RP.A.3c), enhancing understanding of mathematical concepts."

Notably, the diagrams contain no shading.

Man shot by federal agents has died, police chief says
The man shot by federal agents this morning has died, Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O' Hara told the Minnesota Star Tribune.
Several witnesses have already been transported to the Whipple building. ICE attempted to order local police from the scene, but O'Hara refused, sources said.
O'Hara instructed his officers to preserve the scene. The BCA was en route to the scene.
All available MPD officers have been called into work, except dogwatch (overnight shift), and days off cancelled.

"Hey Christopher!" they say. "Math On-A-Stick is great fun and all, but what does it have to do with school math?"
Four paired images. Each pair consists of (1) a photograph of a pattern drawn in sand on a rotating disk, and (2) a graph showing a close approximation the sand pattern, rendered digitally on a grid of polar coordinates. From left to right, the patterns are (1) circle centered at the origin, (2) circle, off center from the origin, (3) linearly growing spiral, and (4) linearly growing spiral, but the path is more star-shaped and jaggedy than circular, and having seven "points" on the star.

I am becoming more and more suspicious that those rulers were lightly-edited AI slop. Dig this poster in the avatar's classroom.
five shapes on a poster hanging from a hook. Two triangles at the top, three quadrilaterals beneath. Under each shape is a scribbly line imitating text. Each shape has an internal subdividing line, such as you might use to indicate the height of a shape that lacks right angles. Importantly, the ones in the triangles are not perpendicular to any of the sides (although one more egregiously so than the other), and one of the lines in a non-square rectangle is a diagonal. All of the shapes, notably, have horizontal bases.

I do not have time for all 56 parts of this tour right now.
A modal popped up in front of a cartoony window with a melancholy bunny. This bunny has maybe been crying, or is about to? Imagine like your childhood invisible friend bunny has come to life and is seeing you again for the first time since you cast him prior to your own adolescence. This bunny has known sadness, and is now filled with a tentative yet powerful hope. The modal reads "Start your tour by choosing a section! Show me how ALEKS Adventure" and then there are four options (1) Engages and motivates students (0/18), (2) Individualizes to Students' Needs (0/11), (3) Supports Independent Learning (0/15), (4) Builds Retention and Mastery (0/12)

But then what about this ruler which appears three seconds later, and which is evidently the work of a totally different ruler designer than the previous one?
Again there are tall and short markings—seven shorts between each tall. The first of these is at the far left of the ruler, perhaps denoting zero? And again the digits are centered between the tall markings.
220
Christopher Danielson @triangleman.bsky.social · 04/12/2025
what's up with this ruler?
A ruler measures a fish. The ruler has tall/long markings, with shorter ones in between. The numbers on the ruler are centered between the tall markings. There are seven shorter markings between each of the tall ones, and four markings between the left-most tall one and the end of the ruler. The fish is measured between the tall marking to the right of 3 and the one to the right of 6.
