✨️🌿🌺🦋🌺🌿✨️ hummingbird moth: knowing names by flavor #SenryuSunday #PaintbyWords #EastCoastKin #BloomScrolling
This is a nature photo I took of a hummingbird hawk-moth resting on a lavender princess rhododendron. The moth is facing away with wings fully extended, catching light like stained glass. Antennas are held in a V-pattern, their serrated edges visible. A moss green patch of fuzz trails down its back. Velvety umber bands circle the abdomen. The tail ends in a splay of dark plumes. Lavender-pink blooms beneath the moth blur into the green background bokeh.

I can hear colors, see music, smell emotions, and taste words. This cross-sensory perception is called synesthesia. I was born this way. It took me a long time to realize this condition made me different. And trust me, being different isn’t something most of us want to be. It’s very isolating, especially when extreme pain comes with it. As a child, I described these sensations and people either thought I was trying to be funny, or because I was artistic, I had an overactive imagination. Sometimes I laughed along, finding joy in their amusement, but it also chipped away at my truth. You’d think this would give me an advantage with sense-switching in haiku or senryu. It does not. The cross-sensory that I experience is hard for most people to follow; the leap is too far. When I sense switch in poetry, I have to make-believe that I don’t have synesthesia for it to make sense. The only way I can express my condition through poetry (that isn’t abstract) is to strip sensations down to their bare bones.

For Senryu Sunday and Paint by Words, I wrote my latest senryu to honor synesthesia awareness:

Nature photography is where I find my calm center. This is a photo I took of cream and blue hydrangeas. The entire frame is clustered with pale blooms, pressing, lifting, and sharing the light with one another.

The language of flowers: Among the many legends of Japan, is the most famous story behind hydrangea symbolism. Ages ago, a powerful emperor chose royal duties over his lover. To apologize for his absence and to express deep affection, he gifted her a bouquet of hydrangeas. To this day, the flower is still given as a sincere gesture of regret and gratitude.

This symbolic meaning inspired my latest senryu:

Ravi Kiran's commentary: The crux of this haiku is the second line. Different babies take differently to their first visit to a beach. Some get very excited and others get petrified. Here is a black and white nature photo of an acorn split in have, revealing its heart shape inside. The seed half rests in the upper left side, its top slightly tilts left on a fallen log. In the background, textures of cracks and wood chips dip in and out of the bokeh.

Fun fact: The average oak produces 2,000 to 10,000 acorns a year. During the tree’s “mast year,” which occurs every 2-5 years to ensure survival, it produces 10,000 acorns. Also known as bumper crops, this massive output helps the seeds escape being eaten. Nature is incredible. I couldn’t help but wonder, what about our output of love? Is more love in our lives the answer to our survival? Focusing on building supportive communities, friendship, and nurturing the land feels right. For us, every year can be a mast year; this realization inspired the latest alliterative senryu from my journal.

This is a macro nature photo I took of blueberries blooming. A green stem angles in from the upper-right corner and places the blossoms at the mid-left side. There's a cluster of five pink buds in the center and three white bell-shaped blooms surrounding them. In the blue-green background, the bokeh holds another cluster of bright pink buds to the upper-left.

Winter heals many wounds. Some of us think of hibernation as a hindrance, a stifling of progress, or a forced rest. But what happens when we take the time our bodies need to recover? We heal. For those of us with chronic illness, which is not an injury but a state we navigate daily, healing becomes a circle, not a line with a beginning and an end. We all carry these bruises, whether visible or internal, and it's important to acknowledge that we're each doing our best. I wish you all deep healing and comfort. I took this photo of the carved eaves on the former Main Hall at the Fukagawa Fudō-dō Temple in Koto, Tokyo, Japan. This was before all the major renovations had been completed. I was there during March to celebrate hanami in honor of my granny, who was from Tokyo. These elegant carvings reflect the traditional Inami style indicative of the late Edo/early Meiji period.

In the lower left, elegant swirls of wooden waves surround a bird with wings spread and one leg out, navigating strong forces. Farther right, another bird is tucking into a curl, downward-facing, and riding the front wave with serene grace. The wood is a mixture of warm red and grey tones; its grain is striped and softly weather-worn. There’s a mid-line crack running the length of the beam overhead. In the lower right corner, shadows mask the inner temple.

My time at Fukagawa Fudō-dō inspired the haiku from my Tokyo journal:

This is a black and white landscape nature photo I took of Lake Champlain from the shore in Burlington Vermont.

Elegant rays fan over the glimmering lake. Winter sun's bright reflection glows atop the right surface of Champlain and stretches left into a thin line of light. It was a rough day at sea when I took this black and white photo while sailing around El Arco, located on the coast of Cabo San Lucas, where the Pacific meets the Sea of Cortez. The smooth tides of Lovers Beach are on the Cortez side of the arch, and Divorce Beach’s thrashing tides are on the Pacific side. El Arco's jagged dip into the misty tides is accentuated by its open arch. Waves crash through the opening, and its uneven roundness offers a hazy view of what lies beyond: the calm stretch of shore known as Lover's Beach.

This is a macro nature photo I took of the Hellebore buds in our front yard. I planted them last year, and their displays of hardiness do not disappoint! It’s one of my favorite winter-blooming flowers. Deep forest green leaves rimmed in aubergine and violet, cradle two dark magenta buds. The largest bud faces right. Tipped upward, its outer petals catch light, revealing stomata flecks patterned like an unopened galaxy. The flower and leaves soften into a dark purple and pink background bokeh.

This is a photo I took overlooking St. John’s Trunk Bay—one of my favorite places. In the off season, it becomes so quiet and even more beautiful. Before the trade winds pick up, the breeze feels like a sweet caress mimicked by the tides. The bay cups a blue gradient from clear aquamarine to deep indigo. Tropical green trees, distant mountains, and companion islands frame the small stretch of perfect powder-soft sand. The blue sky above holds fluffy clouds—the slow kind that morph into fairytale creatures. It’s one of the few places I actively miss and dream about. This is a landscape nature photo I took this morning of fog coming up over the forest. As the sun rose, rays of light and layers of mist curled through the cedar, pine, and poplar. In the distance, five crows scattered from left to right, just over the hazy mountains.

Gran would be thrilled! 🥹 Thank you kindly, DJ Tyrer, 5-7-5 Haiku Journal, and Atlantean Publishing. 🙏 Gran was a mountain healer. There wasn't a fence she wouldn't jump, or animal she couldn't charm. My love of nature and words is genetic. ✨️🍂⛰️👵⛰️🍂✨️ #writingcommunity #haiku #poetry #publishing

Golden Ribbon is a landscape photo I took on horseback, riding along a dirt road. To the left, a honey-gold meadow sways. On the right, a green line of forest is accented by red maples, dotting the distance. A dirt road with its median of tawny grass, growing between the tire tracks, cuts through both scenes and disappears into the woods ahead. Above, the sky is a gradient of cerulean to light blue. Across it, brushstrokes of stratus clouds wisp from right to left. It was a beautiful autumn day that inspired my modern 3-5-3 haiku:

A macro nature photo I took of mistflowers near our forest line. These fringed fireworks are a herald of autumn. Always a delightful surprise, so delicate, wispy, and bright—even their berrylike disk florets are stunning. I shot this at an angle, to show off the variations of its floral tiers. Before the vast meadow, their periwinkle glow stands out against a green grass bokeh.

I awoke as fog rolled over the spring mountain, and took this landscape photo deep within the Primland forest. In wavering veils, the understory blinked in and out of its mossy bed. Half monochrome, half green—a white softness layers the distance with ghostly limbs. How hauntingly beautiful the saplings were in their slender splays of sleepy branches, appearing and disappearing like dendritic secrets.

Here is a macro nature photograph I took of the Mimosa blossoms, blooming in my backyard. We planted this Mimosa 7 years ago. This is its first year blooming, and it decided to do so on my father's birthday. What a very special year for a very special tree. The hot pink stamen filaments look like fireworks against the soft blue and purple bokeh of the background. Pops of blurred pink hint at more surrounding blossoms. Its green buds peep and hide around the flowers like verdant mines about to burst into bloom.

This is a photo portrait I took of Beethoven, my long-haired Tabby cat little brother. We hand-raised him from birth. He was found abandoned in our shed—he was no bigger than a mouse! I titled this photo Handsome View to honor his 2nd name. Regal and fluffy, he stares out beyond the window's green bokeh, sitting on my black dresser, his orange reflection in the glass seemingly gazing into the camera.

Nature photo I took in Tokyo at sunset, near Chinzan-sō. Cherry trees line the park, edging the canal, reflecting a periwinkle sunset. Tendrils of ivy stretch down the canal wall towards the water, where petals scatter across the magenta surface. Red hanami lanterns hang between the pink trees.

A sunset landscape photo I took over a lake in Florida. The clouds are ablaze with gold, magenta, indigo, and pink. The rolling land is in silhouette. All is reflected on the mirrored surface of the lake.

This photo is paired in shahai form with a haiku poem I wrote:

This is a composite I created by layering another portrait I took of him inside, looking out the window. Yes, Photography magic.

My cameo silhouette portrait of the fire breather and dancer Sky Claudette Soto in NYC. She leans from the darkness into the light, creating a cameo silhouette of her face. The beaded cap she's wearing catches light, as does her soft shoulder and feather bando, curving into the secondary spotlight from behind. This was shot with a Nikon Z8.
