The Association for Human Mathematics (AHM) statement on OpenAI’s October 6 release of mathematical documents just dropped! www.ahmath.org/statements
AHM Statement on OpenAI’s October 6 Release of Mathematical Documents

Yesterday, on October 6th, 2026, OpenAI – which is currently defending lawsuits against accusations of illegal plagiarism, copyright infringement, and trademark dilution – released a repository of manuscripts purporting to contain solutions to a number of high-profile problems in mathematics.

Mathematicians did not ask for this work to be done. The Advisory Group on Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence, from whom OpenAI has claimed to derive its legitimacy, opened their initial advisory statement by saying that frontier AI corporations should not test advanced mathematical problems on internal models. In ignoring the central premise of the Advisory Group’s position, OpenAI has indicated total disregard for the norms of scientific research — norms that guarantee that mathematics remains trustworthy, ethically researched, and in the public interest.

Mathematicians have a particular vision of progress that is informed by history and field-specific considerations. We reject OpenAI's assertion that this release advances our subject, and we urge mathematicians and the public to view the value of this publication model with due skepticism.

Releasing over 700 files at once is not a demonstration of scholarship, but a demonstration of power. We urge mathematicians to discontinue their work with OpenAI and to return to a vision of science that centers human understanding.

I would celebrate this woman’s life rather than mourn her passing. A true trailblazer and someone whose contribution to my world cannot be trapped by mere numbers.

The company wants a $1.5 trillion valuation. They are also screeching about AI safety and how they need to be slowed down. Maybe if they focused on safety from the start this wouldn’t be costing half a million dollars but given what they are spending on operations, half a million is negligible

Am I missing something or is the M4 station at Montparnesse completely inaccessible? I have transferred to/from Gare du Nord-Montparnasse twice lately with much lugging of heavy luggage, and it is, even without a bag, insufferable. But there isn’t even an escalator. At least I can lug. Wheelchairs?

I wish we would ban estate agents from using only AI enhanced images. Show me the property as it actually looks too. You are looking for 400ke plus for this place. The least you could do is avoid completely false advertising and I don’t care that you say the ad is not contractually binding

Many years ago, Joseph O’Connor wrote an essay about a now rarely mentioned Ireland England football match in 1995 which resulted in riots and the match ultimately being abandoned. He had been on a London Dublin flight and he mentioned one young man and the need for him to belong to a group of peers

When I see headlines like this, I think the monetisation needs not just to be stopped but a triple fine applied to the platform too. And in the US, since corporations are persons there, the companies should get criminal records. Can’t help feeling that would soften a few coughs.

This is an extraordinary piece of writing and while I wasn’t a researcher, I did my masters on unsupervised learning. I cannot recognise the AI LLM industry as AI and it isn’t what I loved about machine learning. It is worth especially reading to the end to understand the extent of opportunity cost

I have been donating money to the RNLI for more than 20 years. I no longer live in an area where they are likely to be called upon to save my life but while I was reconsidering whether to continue or not, I cannot justifiably stop. Not when I see what is being done to them at the moment.

My YouTube feed has lately been full of women whinging about Caran d’Ache re-releasing some limited edition colour crayons. It has, apparently, reached the level of Situation with a capital S. It is incredibly tedious to listen to. The crayons were not, still are not, available as open purchase.

Lack of critical thinking is why people might believe this. Confiscate their money - I mean their cash, not their wishful thinking future values - and get rid of them. Make them learn to use slide rules.

There is a cat robot dustbin in CDG terminal 2 which is more intelligent, more useful and more tangible than this wildly idiotic male fantasy concept. Any competent journalist would interview not the software but the people behind the software.

One of the main Irish auction houses has an auction of important Irish art running around now. One of my very occasional pleasures is to take a look at the catalogues of such events to see if they have anything interesting. So I can tell you that they have three Paul Henry’s atm.

#OnThisDay 5 Sept 1926, around 150 people gathered in a makeshift cinema in Dromcollogher, Co. Limerick. By the end of the evening, 48 people had lost their lives. Known locally as ‘The Burning’, the disaster remains Ireland’s worst cinema fire. ow.ly/k4lv50ZIyjN

There’s a restaurant in Amsterdam Airport where you access the menu via a QR code which identifies your table. Opens your browser, you do the order, it keeps a running tab in case you order more stuff later. No need for a login, no need for an app. In short, there is a functioning solution for this

There is a major issue in UK press/journalism in that most of what they push is not news, but commentary, much of it self important but lacking in any sort of social value. I have to hope that at some point we will get back to an era of sanity but that hope is forlorn.

If you want to tell the Irish government what to do, you need to be an Irish voter. They aren’t answerable to a British newspaper or a bunch of US based academics.
