Thanks for the report 🙏 helpful to see how these things actually happen. Do you think the prompt-injected agent had access to Google Auth creds or was it controlling an already-logged-into-Claude browser session? (In which case, would avoiding Google Auth have actually helped anything?)

Does "intelligence" imply some kind of sentience to you? I think for a lot of people intelligence means something like "the ability to solve novel problems," which is present in lots of systems in varying degrees, and which I wouldn't expect to grant rights or personhood on its own.

Yeah I should have been more clear, it only "doesn't matter" for the final upload. Most of the gotchas are when you have clips from different sources that need to stay in sync. Screen recordings are almost always 60fps, so if you have a camera going at the same time, make sure it's at 60 too.

I believe you live in the reality where it doesn't really matter and they are just giving example rates. Just keep it the same as how it was recorded. If you need it to look perfect on NTSC broadcast TV and can't abide a 0.1% time stretch, then record at 59.94. Otherwise default 60.

With you on awareness being fundamental, and on computationalism's induction problem. But personally I think physical causal structures *are* configurations of awareness, not projections from it. Experience has dynamic structure, and that structure is what we model with physics.

On the face of it these two possibilities seem completely compatible to me, but I assume I'm missing something important

Some of these definitions will seem more or less useful/comforting/dangerous to different people. a) puts thinking in the same category as "feeling", and could be combined with b) for a holistic human-centric definition c) seems way too broad d) invites the question: what kind of process exactly?
000
dʒeɪmz @transmute.ca · 11/05/2026
We could choose to define "thinking" in many ways, such as: a) the experience of having thoughts b) the generation of thoughts-as-experiences c) the generation of information structures of a particular shape d) the generation of information structures using a particular kind of process

dʒeɪmz @transmute.ca · 11/05/2026
I think this gets to something fundamental. We have the experience of "having thoughts," but when we closely attend to their arising, we can't find any direct awareness of the process that generates them. Nevertheless, we tend to identify as both "the thinker" and "the experiencer of thought."

Are you saying that the human is always going to be the lead idea-contributor by definition, because they are conscious and the LLM is not, and therefore the LLM cannot contribute any "ideas" by definition? It seems to me that we then lose some useful ways of talking about what the LLM is doing.
110
dʒeɪmz @transmute.ca · 11/05/2026
Suppose we refrain from saying that the LLM "had the main ideas," because we decide that ideas require consciousness/sentience/whatever LLMs don't have. How should we then talk about the LLM's contribution to the work relative to the human? Isn't "where did the idea come from" a reasonable question?

April 8 2024 was my first experience of totality. I drove 15 hours in one day to see it with a clear sky, and the whole time there and back I was listening to a lecture series by Justin Sledge on the history of Jewish mysticism. Definitely lost my mind a little, great combo, A+ would recommend.

Photography took roughly a century from the time people started using it to make "art" to it becoming broadly accepted as an art form. For me this supports the idea that cultural disavowal can be very durable, while also provoking humility as it highlights the cultural relativism of it all...

For real. But also I assume the 2% bump is on the marginal rate, right? In which case $0 extra on the first million—you'd need to be making $2m before you see a $20k increase

I think you can still find the wifi ones but I don't love buying into a discontinued product. They might be transitioning to a new version yet to be released? But also maybe just leaning into enterprise market. I'm definitely not going to get new Ethernet cable run to my door for that though.

I am also in the market for such a doorbell and landed on Ubiquiti for WiFi APs, and assumed I'd go for their doorbells too but they seem to be phasing out regular doorbell power supply + wifi in favour of PoE only? So I'm currently looking at Reolink doorbell + Synology NAS w/Surveillance Station 🤔

The article cites David Chalmers, who is literally the guy who first described the "hard problem" of consciousness. If you want Philosophy of Mind, you got it. That doesn't mean you have to agree with him, but 🤷🏼‍♂️
In 2023, David Chalmers, a professor of philosophy and neural science at New York University who is one of the world's most prominent scholars in the field of AI consciousness, was firmly in the skeptic camp. That year, he published an essay,
"Could a Large Language Model Be Conscious?," in which he concluded that limitations in the architecture of LLMs at the time, that there was no discernible mechanism by which an Al could become self-aware. Yet he recognized that these machines were so complex, and developing so quickly, that he couldn't be entirely sure.
He assessed the possibility at "somewhere under 10 percent."
Today, he says, the odds have gotten significantly higher — though he won't put a number on it. "I don't know if I'd say that these systems are conscious yet," Chalmers says. "They might be, and this is important.
People who are confident that they're not conscious maybe shouldn't be. We just don't understand consciousness well enough, and we don't understand these systems well enough. So we can't rule it out."

I believe experiential consciousness is fundamental to reality so sure, LLMs are conscious. As are traffic jams, thunderstorms, grains of sand, electrons, any system of interacting quantum fields, etc. It's amazing! It also doesn't mean we grieve for every spreadsheet cell with a formula error 🤷🏼‍♂️
