The article cites David Chalmers, who is literally the guy who first described the "hard problem" of consciousness. If you want Philosophy of Mind, you got it. That doesn't mean you have to agree with him, but 🤷🏼‍♂️
In 2023, David Chalmers, a professor of philosophy and neural science at New York University who is one of the world's most prominent scholars in the field of AI consciousness, was firmly in the skeptic camp. That year, he published an essay,
"Could a Large Language Model Be Conscious?," in which he concluded that limitations in the architecture of LLMs at the time, that there was no discernible mechanism by which an Al could become self-aware. Yet he recognized that these machines were so complex, and developing so quickly, that he couldn't be entirely sure.
He assessed the possibility at "somewhere under 10 percent."
Today, he says, the odds have gotten significantly higher — though he won't put a number on it. "I don't know if I'd say that these systems are conscious yet," Chalmers says. "They might be, and this is important.
People who are confident that they're not conscious maybe shouldn't be. We just don't understand consciousness well enough, and we don't understand these systems well enough. So we can't rule it out."

I understand the original thread was about the psychology and intent of individuals. But regardless of intent, isn’t it fair to say that e.g. thousands of Iraqi civilians were massacred by Americans in a matter of weeks? watson.brown.edu/costsofwar/f... watson.brown.edu/costsofwar/f...
Excerpt from https://watson.brown.edu/costsofwar/files/cow/imce/papers/2023/Costs%20of%2020%20Years%20of%20Iraq%20War%20Crawford%2015%20March%202023%20final%203.21.2023.pdf

A table shows Iraqi civilian casualties during the first month of the 2003 U.S. Coalition invasion (March 19 - April 19, 2003), broken down by cause of death and weak.
Weekly data:
	•	Week of March 16: 389 killed by air attack, 603 by other means, 992 total (39.2% air attack)
	•	Week of March 23: 905 killed by air attack, 1,413 by other means, 2,318 total (39.0% air attack)
	•	Week of March 30: 828 killed by air attack, 1,467 by other means, 2,295 total (36.1% air attack)
	•	Week of April 6: 189 killed by air attack, 1,029 by other means, 1,218 total (15.5% air attack)
	•	Week of April 13: 12 killed by air attack, 208 by other means, 220 total (5.5% air attack)
Total casualties: 2,323 killed by air attack, 4,720 by other means, 7,043 total deaths. Air attacks accounted for 33.0% of all civilian deaths during this period.Excerpt from https://watson.brown.edu/costsofwar/files/cow/imce/papers/2023/Costs%20of%2020%20Years%20of%20Iraq%20War%20Crawford%2015%20March%202023%20final%203.21.2023.pdf

The U.S. military planned to avoid civilian casualties in Iraq. As the U.S. Commander Tommy Franks said, just after the war began, "This will be a campaign unlike any other in history, a campaign characterized by shock, by surprise, by flexibility, by the employment of precise munitions on a scale never before seen, and by the application of overwhelming force." However, during the first year of the war in Iraq, in 2003, about 7,500 people were killed by the U.S. led coalition by all methods, including air strikes. As Table 3 shows, most of those people were killed in the first month of the war.Excerpt from https://watson.brown.edu/costsofwar/figures/2021/WarDeathToll

A table shows estimated deaths from post-9/11 wars by category and country/region.

HUMAN COSTS

The number of people killed directly in the violence of the post-9/11 wars in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, Syria, Yemen, and elsewhere are estimated here. Several times as many more have been killed as a reverberating effect of the wars — because, for example, of water loss, sewage and other infrastructural issues, and war-related disease. He's working his way up the ranks
Text from Wikipedia Cap'n Crunch article:

Cap'n Crunch is depicted as a late 18th-century naval captain, an elderly gentleman with white eyebrows and a white moustache, who wears a Revolutionary-style naval uniform: a bicorne hat emblazoned with a "C" and a gold-epauletted blue coat with gold bars on the sleeves. While typically an American naval captain wears four bars on his sleeves, the mascot has been variously depicted over the years wearing only one bar (ensign), two bars (lieutenant), or three bars (commander). As of May 26, 2024, he is now depicted on cereal boxes with the four bars of a naval captain. Voice actor Daws Butler created Cap'n Crunch's voice,
basing it on that of Hollywood and radio character actor Charles
Butterworth.

Interview question and response:

How much time and attention did you spend on these scripts? Another
"Simpsons" writer once compared your scripts to finely tuned machines-if the wrong person mucked with them, the whole thing could blow up.

All of my time and all of my attention. It's the only way I know how to write, darn it. But I do have a trick that makes things easier for me. Since writing is very hard and rewriting is comparatively easy and rather fun, I always write my scripts all the way through as fast as I can, the first day, if possible, putting in crap jokes and pattern dialogue-"Homer, I don't want you to do that." "Then I won't do it." Then the next day, when I get up, the script's been written. It's lousy, but it's a script. The hard part is done. It's like a crappy little elf has snuck into my office and badly done all my work for me, and then left with a tip of his crappy hat. All I have to do from that point on is fix it. So I've taken a very hard job, writing, and turned it into an easy one, rewriting, overnight. I advise all writers to do their scripts and other writing this way. And be sure to send me a small royalty every time you do it.

A Wikipedia entry:

Missing stair

The missing stair is a metaphor for a person within a social group or organization who many people know is untrustworthy or otherwise has to be
"managed," but around whom the group chooses to work by discreetly warning newcomers of their behavior, rather than address the person and their behavior openly. The "missing stair" in the metaphor refers to a dangerous structural fault, such as a missing step in a staircase; a fault that people may become used to and quietly accepting of, that is not openly signposted or fixed, and that newcomers to a group or organization are warned about discreetly.

Wow super interesting stateofcitiessummit.ca/files/051224...
The problem is not so much with English itself; rather, that these nations share a common institutional history, exchange ideas, and learn from one another. As such, our benchmarking investigation concurs with other studies of global transit costs, strongly indicating that national costs are associated most closely with project delivery practices, policies, and governance. In fact, several domestic cases of low-cost transit construction demonstrate that effective project delivery is possible in the Canadian context with a shift away from traditionally Anglophone project delivery practices: Montreal's REM, Vancouver's Canada Line, and Kitchener's ION LRT were all built at costs comparable to global averages at their time of completion.' In the following section, we will build on this finding, examining how rail project delivery in Canada differs from global peers through a careful analysis of Metrolinx case studies. In the words of Alon Levy,
Because the greatest innovation in high-quality, low-cost public works is not ... really in any country where English is the primary language, [North] American governments should maintain global curiosity. "

Yes I am aware of its meaning in law. "Depose" is not one of the "three D's" of insurance company tactics referenced above, and I would suggest that its other meaning might be more relevant in this context.
depose | dr'pauz |
verb [with object]
1 remove from office suddenly and forcefully: he had been deposed by a military coup.
2 Law testify to or give (evidence) under oath, typically in a written statement: every affidavit shall state which of the facts deposed to are within the deponent's knowledge.
