Because Language
Episode 139: Magpie Syntax (with Stephanie Mason)

Australian magpies are even cleverer birds than we thought.
New research from Dr Stephanie Mason shows that they do two language-like things we used to think only humans could do: learn their calls socially, and combine their calls in a way that looks a lot like syntax.
So are we calling this language? If so, how are the linguists taking it?
Stephanie joins us to talk about magpies, media, and the territoriality of linguists.

Episode 347 | Andrew Guthrie Ferguson on How Your Data Will Be Used Against You

In the 18th century, philosopher Jeremy Bentham suggested the Panopticon as a model of a prison where inmates could be constantly observed by just a single prison guard. Although his original idea was never built, the word has come to indicate any system of social control through constant surveillance. Nowadays, we are close to creating such a system, not for prisons, but for our everyday lives. The data about our whereabouts and doings is collected by our smart devices, and available for search by the authorities. I talk with law professor Andrew Guthrie Ferguson about the new reality, as discussed in his book Your Data Will Be Used Against You: Policing in the Age of Self-Surveillance.

Front cover of the book "Mapmatics: How We Navigate the World through Numbers" by Paulina Rowińska.

How does a delivery driver distribute hundreds of packages in a single working day? Why does remote Alaska have such a large airport? Where should we look for elusive serial killers? The answers lie in the crucial connection between maps and maths.

In Mapmatics, Dr Paulina Rowińska embarks on a fascinating journey to discover the mathematical foundations of cartography and cartographical influences on mathematics. From a sixteenth-century map that remains an indispensable navigation tool despite emphasizing the North–South divide, and maps of voting districts that can empower or silence whole communities, to public transport maps that both guide and mislead passengers, she reveals how maps and maths shape not only our sense of space and time but also our worldview.

Through entertaining stories, surprising real-world examples and a cast of unforgettable characters, Mapmatics helps us to appreciate the mathematical methods and ideas behind maps. And, by illuminating how our world works, leaves us better equipped to understand and look after it.

" Cities, cells and the neuroscience of navigation"

If your podcast listening habits are anything like mine, you might be out for a walk right now. Maybe you’re wandering the neighborhood, just blocks from home, or maybe you’re further afield. In either case, I’m guessing you’re finding your way without too much trouble—you’re letting some intuitive sense steer you, track how far you’ve gone, tell you where to go next. This inner navigator of yours is doing all in the background, as your mind wanders elsewhere, and magically it gets it all right. Most of the time, anyway. But how is it doing it? What allows us to pull this off?

My guest today is Dr. Hugo Spiers, Professor of Cognitive Neuroscience at University College London. His lab studies how our brains "remember the past, navigate the present, and imagine the future.” In recent years Hugo and his group have used a wide variety of methods—and some astonishingly large datasets—to shed light on central questions about human spatial abilities.

"The brain's many maps"

If you're a brain, it can be tough to stay organized. The world comes at you fast, from all angles, in different sensory formats- sights, sounds, smells.
You need to take it all in, but you also need to parse it, process it, categorize it, remember and learn from it. And of course you also need react to it, preferably appropriately.

So what do you do-as a brain-to handle this organizational overload?
Well, for one thing, you make maps.

Lots of maps.

• b r t • d e • c a m p i n a s • • inspired by strip maps, here is my minimalist interpretation of the bus rapid transit network in campinas, brazil 🇧🇷 • www.behance.net/gallery/2435... #transitscapes #transitmap #transitsky
Here is a little side project I recently put together to shed some light on the BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) network in Campinas, Brazil.

Like many other cities across South America, Campinas eventually caught on to the utterly viral BRT frenzy! Other modes of transportation (such as trolleybuses and light rail) had been proposed earlier to ease road congestion and improve mobility across a metropolitan area home to more than 3.5 million inhabitants, but the idea of implementing a BRT system ultimately won out in 2011.

However, it took a little over a decade before the BRT network began to be gradually brought into service, starting with the launch of BRT20 on Corredor Campo Grande in 2022.
Corredor Ouro Verde followed in 2023 with the opening of BRT10.
Corredor Perimetral opened last in 2024, completing the originally planned network.

As shown on the map, the system consists of seven lines, distributed across three major corridors totaling almost 37km: Campo Grande, Ouro Verde and Perimetral.
When heading towards the city center, some lines extend beyond their dedicated eastern terminal (Mercado or Central) to run along what is locally known as Corredor Central - a ring-like collection of five one-way avenues looping through the city center, where regular traffic and urban transit are physically segregated.
After completing their loop - serving both Terminal Mercado and Terminal Central along the way - these lines rejoin their respective corridors to continue their outbound journey.

Lines operating on the Ouro Verde and Perimetral corridors stop at all stations up to one of three main terminals - BRT12 to Santa Lúcia, BRT10 to Ouro Verde and BRT11 to Vila Nova.
Lines running along Corredor Campo Grande also serve either of two major terminals: Satélite Íris and Campo Grande. Additionally, they are further divided into all-stops ("parador") for BRT20 and BRT25 or semi-express ("semi-espresso") services for BRT21 and BRT26.

Episode 161 | Cill or Coill?
Recurring Styles in Placenames Pt. 1

A lot of placenames in Ireland begin with Kil- Sometimes this is a reference to a church, sometimes it refers to a woodland.
Sometimes both. What's going on? Did the early Christians steal holy sites from the pagan druids or something?
In the first of a set of episodes, Darach, Gearoidin and Peadar look at some of the recurring features in Irish placenames. This week it's Cill and Coill.
There's also some discussion of the Luas Red Line, the airport bus, the Germans and fax machines. It's all quite relevant.

Front cover of the book "Algospeak: How Social Media is Transforming the Future of Language" by Adam Aleksic

From the rise of leetspeak and words such as unalive to the trend of adding '-core' to different influencer aesthetics, the internet has ushered in an unprecedented linguistic upheaval. We're entering an entirely new era of etymology, heralded by the invisible forces driving social media algorithms.
And with over 7 billion internet users uploading over 2.5 quintillion bytes of media every day, the sheer volume of potential new words is astounding.

In Algospeak, online etymologist Adam Aleksic shines a light on the roots of words that we don't realise have come from unexpected places - from incel culture, from the innovation of users trying to get around content moderation algorithms, from the marketing speak that has invaded our personal lives. New slang emerges and goes viral overnight. Accents are shaped or erased on YouTube. Grammatical rules, loopholes, and patterns surface and transform our interactions, social norms and habits.

Following suit to my previously posted map of Glasgow, here is my lastest design: a geographic representation of rail-based transportation in the city of Edinburgh, Scotland

This map shows the Edinburgh Tram route and stations as well as ScotRail lines and stations located in the area
Bus connections and Park and Ride facilities also appear when available
As with Glasgow's map, a handful of selected points of interests were added for additional context

This map is labeled in both English and Scottish Gaelic (Gàidhlig) - for now! I'd love to be able to present a version featuring Scots so I'm currently looking out for help from speakers of the language
In the meantime, know that some of the Scottish Gaelic names here on the map have been "reconstructed" as no officially sanctioned name for said places is approved yet
It is true only for some of the points of interests while all rail and subway stations names in both English and Gàidhlig are those officially approved by their respective controlling bodies and institutions promoting the Gàidhlig language in Scotland

Enjoy the ride!

"Traversing the fourth dimension"

My guest today is Dr. Adam Bulley. Adam is a psychologist and Postdoctoral Fellow affiliated with the University of Sydney and Harvard. Along with his co-authors Thomas Suddendori & Jonathan Redshaw, Adam recently published a book titled, "The Invention of Tomorrow: A Natural History of Foresight."

In this conversation, Adam and I talk about two constructs central to the book-"mental time travel" and foresight. We discuss how these constructs relate to memory and to imagination. We dig into the question of whether our abilities to think ahead are really uniquely human. We review the archeological evidence for the emergence of foresight in our species' evolution. And we also touch on among other topics and tidbits— hoarding behavior in squirrels, tool use in chimpanzees, the Bischof-Köhler hypothesis, the control of fire, Incan quipus, hand axes, and longtermism.

Deep in the Mojave Desert, there is a little town with a big name and a bizarre history: California City.

For decades, real estate developers have sold a dream here: if you buy land now, you’ll be rich one day. Thousands of people bought this dream. Many were young couples and hard-working immigrants looking to build a better future. But much of the land they bought is nearly worthless.

In this new podcast from LAist Studios, host Emily Guerin tells a story of money, power and deception.
