Because Language
Episode 139: Magpie Syntax (with Stephanie Mason)

Australian magpies are even cleverer birds than we thought.
New research from Dr Stephanie Mason shows that they do two language-like things we used to think only humans could do: learn their calls socially, and combine their calls in a way that looks a lot like syntax.
So are we calling this language? If so, how are the linguists taking it?
Stephanie joins us to talk about magpies, media, and the territoriality of linguists.

Sean Carroll's Mindscape Podcast

Episode 347 | Andrew Guthrie Ferguson on How Your Data Will Be Used Against You

In the 18th century, philosopher Jeremy Bentham suggested the Panopticon as a model of a prison where inmates could be constantly observed by just a single prison guard. Although his original idea was never built, the word has come to indicate any system of social control through constant surveillance. Nowadays, we are close to creating such a system, not for prisons, but for our everyday lives. The data about our whereabouts and doings is collected by our smart devices, and available for search by the authorities. I talk with law professor Andrew Guthrie Ferguson about the new reality, as discussed in his book Your Data Will Be Used Against You: Policing in the Age of Self-Surveillance.

Two small photographs mounted one above the other on a white panel between wooden trim. Top image: a person stands beside a large white vending machine labeled ICE against a beige brick wall with orange trim; bright sunlight casts the person’s long shadow on the wall. Bottom image: a clear blue sky with a tall metal signpost holding a “SELF SERV” sign with a left arrow and a stylized cup symbol. Strong color contrasts and clean geometric lines evoke roadside Americana.

A wide interior view of an ornate gallery room with patterned tile floors, carved wooden paneling, and stained‑glass windows. Four large framed photographs hang on the walls, each showing sunlit roadside scenes: a person in a vehicle, a tall sign against blue sky, someone standing by a building, and a motel sign. Warm light and rich architectural details frame the contemporary images, creating a contrast between historic décor and modern Americana.

Left photo: a tall roadside sign reading RV PARK ENTRANCE with a smaller RV sign against a clear blue sky. Right photo: view from outside a vehicle showing a seated person, their face reflected in the side mirror, and a straight road stretching into the distance. Photograph mounted on a wooden wall showing a travel moment inside a vehicle. A forearm in a bright orange sleeve rests on the open window frame; the side mirror reflects the driver’s face wearing sunglasses. Outside, a clear blue sky stretches above utility poles and a roadside sign with the partial word “PARK.” Warm daylight highlights textures of fabric and glass, conveying a relaxed, on-the-road mood and a sense of movement and perspective.

Framed photograph hanging above a wooden cabinet. It shows a person outdoors holding a can aloft, head tilted back as droplets rise into the air. Behind them stands a tall, weathered vintage sign shaped like a vertical arrow topped with a star, reading “STARDUST” and “MARFA” in faded letters. The sky glows in soft blue‑pink light, giving the scene a dreamy, nostalgic, roadside‑Americana feel.

Front cover of the book "Mapmatics: How We Navigate the World through Numbers" by Paulina Rowińska.

How does a delivery driver distribute hundreds of packages in a single working day? Why does remote Alaska have such a large airport? Where should we look for elusive serial killers? The answers lie in the crucial connection between maps and maths.

In Mapmatics, Dr Paulina Rowińska embarks on a fascinating journey to discover the mathematical foundations of cartography and cartographical influences on mathematics. From a sixteenth-century map that remains an indispensable navigation tool despite emphasizing the North–South divide, and maps of voting districts that can empower or silence whole communities, to public transport maps that both guide and mislead passengers, she reveals how maps and maths shape not only our sense of space and time but also our worldview.

Through entertaining stories, surprising real-world examples and a cast of unforgettable characters, Mapmatics helps us to appreciate the mathematical methods and ideas behind maps. And, by illuminating how our world works, leaves us better equipped to understand and look after it.

A bold geometric illustration in red, navy, and beige fills the frame. Angular shapes form stylised buildings, a tree, and a circular dish-like element. The composition feels modern and graphic, with flat colours and sharp lines. The names “Legeai” and “Gaspard skate shop” appear within the design, integrated into the abstract cityscape.

Many Mind Podcast
" Cities, cells and the neuroscience of navigation"

If your podcast listening habits are anything like mine, you might be out for a walk right now. Maybe you’re wandering the neighborhood, just blocks from home, or maybe you’re further afield. In either case, I’m guessing you’re finding your way without too much trouble—you’re letting some intuitive sense steer you, track how far you’ve gone, tell you where to go next. This inner navigator of yours is doing all in the background, as your mind wanders elsewhere, and magically it gets it all right. Most of the time, anyway. But how is it doing it? What allows us to pull this off?

My guest today is Dr. Hugo Spiers, Professor of Cognitive Neuroscience at University College London. His lab studies how our brains "remember the past, navigate the present, and imagine the future.” In recent years Hugo and his group have used a wide variety of methods—and some astonishingly large datasets—to shed light on central questions about human spatial abilities.
