In the late ’70s and early ’80s, NYC introduced distinctive square subway entrance lamps as part of system modernization. I recreated both flat and glow versions of these iconic designs for a new poster and subway map cover concept. A small tribute to a unique era in transit history.

The IRT, redrawn in the style of its 1924 map but with today’s service. This one maps the current lines using the near-exact layout and visual feel of the old IRT map. I couldn’t replicate the org. hand type, so I used a close match (for now) but everything else has the 1924 vibe!

I recreated this unique map, which was proposed by the Subway Map Commitee to replace the Vignelli map of the 1970s. I highly recommend that you read the interesting story of how this map was discarded in favor of the trunk colors that John Tauranac wanted (by Peter Lloyd). 1/3
