Content warning: suicide After May Pollard died on a late-January morning, a detective asked her parents a question: Had anyone wanted to hurt her? “A lot of America,” her mother answered. 1/ www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news...

Idaho pushed anti-trans laws for years. Then a teen died.
The life and death of May Pollard, 16, provides a window into the tragic effect that legislation and political rhetoric have had on trans people in America.

I was banned from the sport I dedicated years to when I was 17 because taking T was ‘doping’ and I couldn’t get an exemption because I wasn’t competing at high enough levels, but couldn’t compete at higher levels because I didn’t have an exemption. Been years and still think about it every day.

Nancy Mace acting on disinformation that the shooter was trans: goes off on tirade against "trannies" Nancy Mace when the actual shooter is a Christian white man: "he's just a poor lost boy, let us pray for him."

Israel isn't in control of the United States. This is just who the US is and has always been. Saying we're controlled is just a way of saying we're victims. We're not. We're an imperial power that likes war because it's profitable and enriches our oligarchs. That's it.

Yes and I challenge the notion trans people have "increased" visibility compared to the 2000s or before. We've been a focus of fascination and mockery across the entire history of mass media and lots of people are plainly nostalgic for the pleasure they got from our public humiliation

1. Alert, and please share widely. A lawyer at the ACLU has asked me to inform my transgender readers that they should NOT be applying for passports right now - the state department has not issued guidance to comply with the court order and they are urgently trying to get them to do so. 🧵

except it is stereotyping when the concern of ‘irreversibility’ only applies to people changing their sex and not people being forced to not change their sex (puberty has higher regret rates than transitioning but no one talks about that because cis good and trans bad)
UNITED STATES v. SKRMETTI

Opinion of the Court

was not improper to conclude that kids benefit from additional time to 'appreciate their sex' before embarking on body-altering paths. Nor is it improper for the State to protect minors from procedures that 'encourage them to become disdainful of their sex'—and thus at risk for serious psychiatric conditions." (citations and alterations omitted));

If you as a reporter are assigned to cover an issue as the lead reporter for a major paper and the entirety community you are covering won't talk to you because they don't trust you, maybe you shouldn't be covering that issue. It's journalistic malpractice.

once again i am saying two things can be true at the same time - the u.s. military is a blight on the world that must be dismantled - banning trans people from the u.s. military is a way for conservatives to declare themselves arbiters of who "deserves a job" and who "dies of exposure"

The thing we keep coming back to is that trans people have been so utterly deprived of epistemic authority that the predominant and prevailing narratives of our lives and experiences either cater to or directly stem from the cis society that sexualizes, pathologizes, and infantilizes us.

Does this imply anyone (maybe only knowingly) referring to a trans person by their name or pronouns is “practicing medicine without a license”

Saw this and immediately ran to Travis Alabanza’s “None of the Above,” looking for a quote I can’t find but here’s a page I think summarizes, but this is the subject of the entire first chapter (great book, recommend)
Transness is held to a higher scrutiny, so we are seen as the performative choice or reaction, rather than as living proof of the reactionary ways the gender binary makes us live. We, rather than the gender binary itself, are seen as unnatural. So much of the narrative around LGBTQIA+ identities, especially those more marginalized, such as transness, rely on us to state that we were innately born this way in order for us to be accepted. We "cannot help who we are" so therefore deserve to be protected. Safety is conditional on our innate difference. We need a discovery moment that is clear as day, that highlights the unchangeable reality that we exist.
Yet I think this obsession with asserting innate knowing onto transness is to comfort Michelle at the dinner table, rather than to really try and understand us. It places the identity of the other person, the non-trans questioner, into a passive rather than an active state. Muted, almost. If you make it all about the way I was born, or an immovable innate fact, then the identity in question has nothing to do with you and the responsibility falls solely on me. Then transness becomes all about the individual —how they were born, what genetics they may or may not have, how they are the anomaly to the rule-and less about the systems and circumstances that may have impacted the way they view themselves and their gender. It becomes all about how I gained knowledge

These executive orders on banning federally funded entities from recognizing trans people or disallowing them from using the bathroom are not self-executing or immediately enforceable. They require formal rule making at a minimum. They are a scare tactic. Ignore and do not comply in advance.

My docs changed when I turned 18 and turns out my old doc (at a queer specialty clinic) was underdosing me for 2 years and lying about it, even when I hesitantly (scared i would be taken off) raised health concerns i was experiencing. And i’m lucky when it comes to starting hrt young in the US.

regular PSA as always that when you doctor says "please do blood labs in the middle of the cycle" you should smile, nod, and then do labs at the end of the cycle. mid cycle data is completely useless and is actively harmful to your health for the levels that most endocrinologists mandate per WPATH.

False complementarianism--our experiences are asymmetric, and have surprising parallels. Transmascs experience regendering misogyny, but that doesn't mean that transfems are treated like men. We also experience misogyny, due to degendering, and are womanized, dehumanized, and expelled from manhood.

White text on black background that reads:

This!! I think a lot of transmasculine people get caught up with the idea that transmasc and transfem experiences must be inverses of each other (or that their oppression neatly aligns with that of cis gender-dynamics). An idea that requires either a rejection of the oppression transmascs know they experience, or an acceptance of (trans)misogynistic ideas.

This has been part of my frustration with the queer academy: for all the exclusion of transfeminine perspective, there is no "Whipping Boy". There is no accessible model for transmasculine oppression, and it's left so many of our siblings utterly rudderless and ill-equipped in these conversations.

These are always funny cause if I craved validation I sure as hell wouldn’t have transitioned. Like I came out at 13 and lost my entire friend group and was sent death threats for 9 months. I was banned from doing the sport that formed a majority of my support system after I started HRT at 16.

I don’t think cis people understand how violent denying transition access is. Like they will go around spewing hypotheticals about how awful it would be for cis people to be forced to get a sex change not realizing (or rather not caring) that is what is happening to us.

This might be a “being too woke” moment for me, but I think people should stop saying it was never about kids. Sure it was never *only* about kids but (1) even if it was, it would be bad and (2) kids (especially queer kids) being denied autonomy over their identity is a key part of this process.

I don’t think people understand how much US politics is just people reacting to what the man on TV says. The median voter has been so (intentionally) deprived of education that this will continue to be the result.
