Just now, A4TE's legal team walked into court to advocate for Dr. Gennifer Herley, a trans woman seeking gender-affirming facial surgery. Aetna Life Insurance Company (Aetna) covers similar surgeries for cisgender patients but will not cover them for trans people. (1/3)

Happy International Women's Day! In the last decade, we've seen more and more trans women be elected to local, state, and federal positions. Every day, they transform the systems they touch, and bring us closer to a future of true justice and equality for all.

Rebranding conversion therapy as “exploratory therapy” doesn’t change what it is: A harmful, cruel practice with long-lasting consequences. And as we point out here, “Trans people, including trans youth, know who they are.” www.rollingstone.com/culture/cult...
Some of the most concerning parts of the report have to do with mental health, including the proposal to treat gender dysphoria with “exploratory therapy” — which experts are calling out as a rebanding of conversion therapy — and false claims that mental health assessments play little or no role in current gender-affirming care. Rolling Stone spoke with a range of experts to learn about what gender-affirming care actually involves, and why “exploratory therapy” could be harmful for transgender kids.

Kelly Parry-Johnson, A4TE senior staff attorney said this: “…acceptance of gender and sexual diversity and a commitment to justice for every single person, including LGBTQI+ people, are core religious beliefs and practices.”
"Too often, trans and queer Muslims and other members of religious minorities are really left out of these discussions of religious liberty," she said. "For our clients, acceptance of gender and sexual diversity and a commitment to justice for every single person, including LGBTQI+ people, are core religious beliefs and practices.

We're talking puberty blockers, hormone therapy, or gender-affirming surgeries — none would be required. This creates coverage and treatment barriers, and is unfair. Trans people deserve more than patchwork coverage. Can you take 2 min to contact your rep? action.transequality.org/a/protecttra...
What do we want?
We demand the protection of trans healthcare access and the preservation of Affordable Care Act (ACA) provisions that support trans individuals, including:
• Gender-affirming care as an essential health benefit (EHB).
• Health coverage access for DACA recipients.
• No new barriers to insurance enrollment or subsidy access.
• Fair and accessible enrollment rules that don't disproportionately harm trans people. How can we fight back?
By law, the federal government must consider public comments before implementing new rules.
Tons of comments forces the government to study the issue and explain itself-and it's the best way to show widespread public support.
This administration has been acting in lawless and unpredictable ways. This is one way to make them follow the rules. Let's get loud! What should I say?
• Write about what gender-affirming care has meant to you. as either a trans person or an ally.
• Emphasize that healthcare is a basic human right, and that everyone deserves access to life-saving care.
• Pull in some of the statistics that we provide above!
• If you're concerned about security, you can always use a last initial or an alias.
• For more ideas on telling your story, check out the Testifying Guide linked in our bio!Submit your comment now at the link in our bio.

Let's make some noise and tell this administration to get their hands off our healthcare!

First, the CMS ruling. This is bad folks. CMS has proposed a rule that would prohibit states from requiring coverage for gender-affirming care as part of their Essential Health Benefits (EHB) under the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Comments due this Friday! action.transequality.org/a/protecttra...
The Trump administration is trying to change insurance rules to deprive trans
people of the care that we need.
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) has proposed a new rule that would prohibit states from requiring gender-affirming care coverage - but we're fighting back. This rule would attack states that are trying to protect their trans residents.

While state-level nondiscrimination laws requiring coverage would remain, this would prohibit states like Colorado and Vermont from enforcing trans-inclusive healthcare as part of these plan's Essential Health Benefits. What does this rule do?
• Bans gender-affirming care as an essential health benefit.
• Strips DACA recipients of healthcare coverage.
• Adds new, unnecessary barriers to enrollment in ACA plans, disproportionately affecting trans people.
• Makes it harder for low-income people to access subsidized care. This change would severely limit access to our medically necessary care, creating barriers to coverage and treatment even in states that are trying to protect their trans residents!

@transrigo.bsky.social responds to Iowa's disgusting attempt to strip trans people of their rights with this statement: "By taking this action, lawmakers are harming the state’s workforce, economy, and reputation—all to curry favor with Trump, who will not restore the damage this unjust law causes."
We are outraged that Iowa—once a leader on LGBTQ equality—is racing to become the first state in the nation to strip trans people of their civil rights protections, erasing decades of progress and tarnishing Iowa’s legacy.

Rodrigo Heng-Lehtinen, A4TE Executive DirectorThe people of the heartland are known for their strength and self-sufficiency; bending the knee to Trump’s extremist agenda to spread hate, destroy democracy, and scapegoat trans people is a betrayal of the state’s values.

“To be clear, these executive orders do not change the law. The role of the executive branch of government is to enforce the laws of this country, and that means the president must follow our Constitution just like everybody else."

In response to the recent @nytimes.com piece, our Executive Director @transrigo.bsky.social shares this statement:

Text reads:

[Washington, D.C.] – Yesterday, Advocates for Trans Equality (A4TE) Executive Director, Rodrigo Heng-Lehtinen, was quoted out of context in a New York Times story, and he released the following statement:

“Yesterday, New York Times ran an article in which I was quoted as saying, ‘We have to make it OK for someone to change their minds,’ and ‘We cannot vilify them for not being on our side. No one wants to join that team.’ Because my quotes were taken out of context, I’d like to clarify what I meant. Those statements were regarding how to persuade every day, undecided people in the public, not people who have already taken actions to oppose our equality.

“Extreme right politicians targeting the trans community is the reason we’re having this conversation at all. So, I want to ensure that no one misinterprets our message to the community: A4TE’s approach has not changed. We will continue confronting the institutions making the rules and we will be at Capitol Hill and in the courts fighting to change the rules to build power for trans people.

“Trans people doing the best they can to live with respect and dignity are not the enemy. We are angry because extremists would like to ban us from bathrooms and control the decisions we make with our doctors. Make no mistake about who the opposition is here. We’re gearing up for the fight of our lives against the incoming administration, and we are not backing off. A4TE logo on right hand side

Text reads: “For nearly a decade, trans advocates have been holding the line against thousands of anti-trans state bills and vile rhetoric to prevent the erosion of hard-fought progress. Now, more than ever, we need to use every tool we have because we cannot afford to cede any ground to anti-equality forces. And we are prepared to confront this period of uncertainty and hardship with the work our community relies upon.

“We will fight. We will organize, we will testify, we will march. Trans people have faced political and legal oppression before, and we will look back at our history to guide us on how to move forward. We cannot, however, allow our fear to provoke us to lose our values. Because our values will sustain us. We can only survive what is to come if we hold on to each other and our ability to be decent and kind and just because we are fighting for a future in which trans people are no less than equal.”
