Listen: I don’t want to minimize the danger of high e-bike speeds. But if the problem here is that stores sell e-bikes that can drive faster than legal limits, then where’s the story about how literally *every car dealership has been doing the same thing for decades*?!?

This piece is 7yrs old but I think about it a lot. It focuses on tsunami/earthquake scenarios, which makes roads impossible or difficult to drive for different reasons: www.cascadepbs.org/environment/...
Staying alive during an earthquake or a tsunami often necessitates
escaping on foot. The U.S. Geological Survey's evacuation guidance
focuses on pedestrians because of copious research into the hazards of
driving, says DNR lead project scientist Dan Eungard.

"After a major earthquake event [like] Cascadia, your road network is
going to be largely unusable," Eungard says, noting that liquefaction,
ground shaking and landslides will destroy roads and bridges. Where
they don't fall apart, downed trees and power lines may make them
impassable. "[In] other major earthquake events around the world, all it
took was one car crash and it's blocked a road, and then everyone else
couldn't evacuate out off of that road in their vehicle."

This is also a story about car dependency. It drives me mad that articles like this never even acknowledge the fact that millions of Americans have few or no options other than driving and bearing the high costs of car ownership.

Every conversation about bike lanes is like: "Car crashes kill a huge number of people every day, including pedestrians, cyclists, & car occupants. Good bike infrastructure has been shown to make everyone safer (& doesn't increase congestion)." "But sometimes cyclists break rules & hit people!"

It’s frustrating to see swift, loud action on e-moto/e-bike regulation when people driving have seriously injured or killed millions of people over decades, and we’ve massively underinvested in bike/walk/transit infrastructure. Car culture is durable and harder to change.

Hannah Weinberger @trailanderror.bsky.social · 07/08/2026
My personal unpopular op: Politicians that say they care about traffic safety but aren’t hustling to approve safer street designs, reduce driving speeds, rein in truck bloat or incentivize bike/walk/transit are performative/unserious. E-moto/e-bike regulation isn’t even a bandaid on car culture.
