T Fitz @tphlair.bsky.social · 06/10/2026Heh. An old friend of mine (who was admittedly a very smart hunk) would go on about how his wife (who he met as a high-school junior) hung around him, asked him out, chased away all her competitors, etc. He didn't think that was in any way remarkable He was a great friend, but in that way an idiot 040
T Fitz @tphlair.bsky.social · 05/10/2026OK I love the fact that there are multiple aviation museums 120
T Fitz @tphlair.bsky.social · 05/10/2026Understood. I haven't been a programmer since 1995. Still, the llm will create code in 15 minutes, that needs to be intensely reviewed, but that would have taken a week for a human. (I've heard this from several modern-day programmers who have done just this) 110
T Fitz @tphlair.bsky.social · 05/10/2026It sounds like, when programmers want to do something that someone, somewhere has already done, the llm will find the old code and fit it to the new task. Given how often programmers need to repeat the work of earlier programmers, it seems to be serious leverage. (Haven't done it myself) 100
T Fitz @tphlair.bsky.social · 04/10/2026This is one of the saddest things to me. When I was growing up, people in NE had iceboats to take out on frozen lakes in winter. Sailboats with open frames, on 3 skates in a triangle. They were insanely fast. I loved seeing them as a kid, haven't seen one in decades. 020

T Fitz @tphlair.bsky.social · 27/09/2026Yeah the testing thing is hard. Maybe we need fake cities like the army has and uses to practice urban warfare. But identification is easy: all cars are required by law to broadcast their maker IDs, all cars get polled constantly and any car without a maker ID goes into a crusher 000
T Fitz @tphlair.bsky.social · 27/09/2026Oh jeez, so sorry. The only reason I don't have a story like that is pure luck. I bike everywhere (Boston area) and am dodging cars parked in the bike lane and drivers weaving around while texting on their phones. We really do need another solution 020
T Fitz @tphlair.bsky.social · 27/09/2026More public transit would be awesome! Also I imagine things like guideways buried under roads, or radios at intersections that broadcast "don't turn left here, there's construction" that tell robot cars what to do. I do think robot cars are inevitable and can be made to work 110
T Fitz @tphlair.bsky.social · 26/09/2026Whoever made the driver software? Human drivers kill over 7000 pedestrians per year in the US. Who is responsible then? I may be being a crank here, but so far 100% of the drivers who have come near to killing me were human. It's hard to believe robots will be worse than that over the long haul 220
T Fitz @tphlair.bsky.social · 26/09/2026Because Boston human drivers are just as much of a danger to pedestrians and bicyclists as robo cars and because I expect robo cars to get better with time, while Boston drivers continue to get worse 100
T Fitz @tphlair.bsky.social · 26/09/2026I've seen Waymo in the Boston area. Don't know if they're available for rides or just testing here. Actually in some ways Boston would be a great target area for Waymo 100
