Fearlessness and determination are the means to go on in this excerpt from Azergui's novel "Ravens' Bread," set during Morocco's "Years of Lead."

The word for Hippo is not attested so far in Old Nubian (ON), but it was likely similar. In Sudanese Arabic, for e.g. [ girinti ] = "Hippo" This word was likely adopted from an ON form.

Cheers for the book recommendation! I'm thinking I should actually start researching this phenomenon within my own ethno-linguistic community instead of losing brain cells arguing with too many ppl who think Meroitic is Nubian & Nubian is the origin of Egyptian & Coptic is just Greek😭

Does anyone know any good research papers on the phenomenon of folk linguistics and the way it intersects with ethnonationalism and ethnic writing? You know, the type that claims language X is the oldest language & the origin of all world languages?

Unfortunately, I find there's noticeably less academic interest in or research of the Sudanese varieties of Arabic as compared to other varieties like North African, Egyptian, or Levantine arabic dialects.

Oh yeah, generally, we understand Egyptian well. Exposure tgru media, migration, etc. I find the style or speed of speech can make it hard to follow sometimes. Besides the main central Sudanese dialect of Khartoum/Omdurman, there's various rural/regional dialects that even I struggle to understand!

At least a few Greek loans in Old Nubian seem to be after the vowel-mergers. E.g., Nub. ⲧⲓⲙⲓⲁⲧⲣ︤ /t̪̻imiat̪̻iɾ/ (vowel-length and tone indeterminable) from Grk. ⲑⲩⲙⲓⲁⲧⲏⲣⲓⲟⲛ. The vowels seem to indicate that ⲏ (and possibly ⲩ too) were already being pronounced /i(ː)/.
