@hjalmarcarlsen.bsky.social and Jonas Toubøl find that people are driven to volunteer by "demand networks": others asking them to help. Women and altruists are most likely to respond to needs. They show this with a survey on COVID volunteering. Paper out now: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/pdf/10.1...

Social network theory 101: networks supply resources, ergo, more connections = more (social) capital. However, supply and demand are two sides of the same coin but the demand side has largely been neglected. In this piece with @hjalmarcarlsen.bsky.social, we theorize this as demand networks. 🧵👇

Best Paper Award 2025

The editors of Acta Sociologica are proud to announce the winners of our first ever annual Best Paper Award:

Patrik Kallio and Anton Törnberg

for their article

Rituals of Resentment: How dark emotional energy fuels the incel identity and solidarity”

published Acta Sociologica vol. 68, issue 3 (2025).

Congratulations 🎉

The article was chosen by a committee consisting of members of the editorial board after nomination by the editors.

In their recommendation the committee writes that the article is “highly interesting, well written, and deeply engaging. It makes a clear and compelling link to theory, while also standing out for its innovative use of data and methods. Given how difficult this field is to break into, the paper’s achievements are especially impressive. Above all, the committee was persuaded by its clear theoretical contribution, particularly the concept of ‘dark emotional energy’.”

The article is free to read online in perpetuity courtesy of Sage.
