New article by our colleague Niklas Pernhaupt et al. in the Nordic Journal of Comparative and International #Education #NJCIE 📝"Navigating the Maze: #Reflexivity as a Critical Skill in Spatialised #Youth Transitions" Read here ➡️ journals.oslomet.no/nordiccie/ar... @univie.ac.at #Sociology
Part of the abstract of the article. Full abstract available via link. Abstract: In contemporary debates on educational quality, learning outcomes are often framed in terms of measurable competences and performance indicators. However, this approach fails to identify reflexivity as a key learning outcome and a central transversal skill in today’s fast-changing and increasingly uncertain societies. Reflexivity is required for identifying and mobilising the knowledge and competences needed to reach one’s goals, and it necessitates understanding the surrounding opportunity structures. Further, we maintain that policy measures can impede or promote reflexivity, which is embedded in institutional arrangements and socio-spatial contexts.

We explored 1) how young people in vulnerable situations displayed reflexivity in educational and school-to-work transitions and disruptions in differing regions in Austria, Finland, and Portugal, and 2) how their reflexivity was supported, ignored, or hindered by their lived experiences of educational and labour market policies and practices. The comparative design enabled examining how distinct transition regimes and socio-spatial configurations shape the development and limits of reflexivity.

Our data consist of biographical narrative interviews with young people in vulnerable situations (N=67). From qualitative thematic analysis, three key themes emerged: 1) opportunities for reflexivity on educational pathways, 2) reflexivity on individual vulnerabilities, and 3) (lacking) institutional support for reflexivity.

New #OpenAccess article by our new colleague Flora Petrik @florapetrik.bsky.social in 'Critical Studies in #Education': 📝 Affective-habitual dispositions: shame, melancholy, and joy in working-class students’ educational transitions Read here ➡️ www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.... #Sociology
Screenshot of the abstract: This paper explores how educational transitions among working-class students are constituted, mediated, and shaped by affectivity. Through in-depth qualitative research conducted in German and Austrian higher education, the study utilises biographical storytelling to prioritise the experiences of students navigating these transitions. Employing a relational lens informed by Bourdieusian sociology, the paper develops the concept of affective-habitual dispositions to illuminate how affects become sedimented within the habitus and shape educational trajectories. The analysis points to distinct affective practices permeating working-class students’ educational experiences: shame, melancholy, and joy contribute to the formation of affective-habitual dispositions, shaping how working-class students make sense of their pathways. By focusing on the often-neglected affective dimension of educational transitions, the study uncovers that affects are pivotal not only in perpetuating inequalities but also as transgressive forces that foster belonging. Ultimately, the conceptual insights derived from this study enhance a critical understanding of affectivity as both reproductive and transformative in relation to social inequality.

📝 New #OpenAccess article by our colleague Raphaela Kogler et al.: "Multiple #vulnerabilities. Adaptation strategies of people experiencing multiple vulnerabilities to #heat in #Vienna" Read here: link.springer.com/article/10.1... @univie.ac.at #Sociology #UrbanHeat
Screenshot wih the abstract "Summer temperatures will continue to rise in the next decades in all European cities and urban heat will become one of the top priorities with its manifold impacts on different social groups. In the context of climate change, urban design and planning processes, it is therefore crucial to consider individual adaptability and changes in living conditions due to urban heat stress. This paper focuses on the concept of heat-vulnerability and the question of how different people experiencing multiple vulnerabilities perceive, and adapt to heat stress. In our case study in Vienna in 2023, we conducted qualitative interviews and focus groups with heat-vulnerable people. After identifying eleven different factors of heat-vulnerability, the theoretical concept of multiple vulnerabilities provided insights into the intra- and interpersonal overlap of vulnerabilities on different dimensions: individual context, temporal characteristics, social and interpersonal factors, living and working conditions, and spatial factors. For most of the people involved in our sample, more than one factor was evident. Those multiple vulnerabilities demonstrate that factors can be seen both as a starting point of vulnerability and as an outcome of urban heat stress itself. Furthermore, the paper examines coping strategies of people experiencing multiple vulnerabilities, such as adjusting daily routines, utilizing nature-based solutions (NbS), and navigating infrastructural challenges. The study highlights the importance of the social construction of vulnerability, by urging that recognizing multiple vulnerabilities can enhance equity-focused responses to urban heat stress." 📝🆕 "Feminist research on platform economies: a conversation on current perspectives and future challenges" by Emma Dowling (our Assoc Prof for #Sociology of #SocialChange) et al. Read here: gh.copernicus.org/articles/81/... @univie.ac.at
Screenshot of the abstract of the article "Feminist research on platform economies: a conversation on current perspectives and future challenges": This article presents an edited transcript of a roundtable discussion originally held at the conference Feminist Perspectives on the Platformisation of Care Work in European Cities at the Europa-Universität Flensburg in 2025, in which the panellists discuss the ways in which a feminist perspective might help to better understand digital platform labour in Europe, current developments in feminist theorising on platform labour and new concerns arising for research and practice. The point of departure is the question of how a feminist perspective informs each scholar's research on platform labour. It continues by considering the feminised sectors of platform labour, intersectional inequalities and gendered labour market dynamics, while also being attentive to the lens of social reproduction and the transversal links between waged and unwaged labour within and outside of the household. To conclude, participants address possibilities for transforming exploitative practices and reflect on directions for future research.

New #DemographicResearch article by Lili Vargha @lilivargha.bsky.social, Eva Maria Schmidt et al.: "The European Parenting Leave Policies (EPLP) dataset: Leave duration entitlements for 21 countries from 1970 to 2024" @demresjournal.bsky.social @univie.ac.at #Sociology 📝➡️ t.ly/nJxiH
Screenshot of the abstract of the article "The European Parenting Leave Policies (EPLP) dataset: Leave duration entitlements for 21 countries from 1970 to 2024": Background: Parenting leave policies shape how caregiving and paid work can be reconciled around the time of childbirth. They have important implications for fertility, employment, and gender equality. Still, there are limited quantitative cross-country data capturing long-term policy changes that impact how long parents can temporarily be away from work to care for their children, and how leave can be shared between them.

Objective: The European Parenting Leave Policies (EPLP) Dataset provides harmonised regulations on maternity, co-parent, paid parental, and job-protected leave across 21 European countries from 1970 to 2024. It focuses on policies that shape how long birth mothers and their co-parents can take leave.

Methods: Statutory leave entitlements were compiled from national legal sources, official government publications, and secondary literature. We followed a consistent set of data collection rules to enable comparison across countries and over time. Because the dataset focuses on time away from the job, it considers only rights for employed parents. It includes 33 variables and also documents country-specific reform timelines.

Contribution: The EPLP Dataset fills a gap in existing data sources by providing quantitative data across 55 years on policies that shape how long parents stay at home around birth and how leave is shared between them. In addition to leave duration and benefits, it covers recent policy instruments such as incentives for parents to share leave, and timing and flexibility of leave use. The dataset enables cross-national comparisons and the analysis of changes over time, and can be used to study the effects of policy reforms.

How do international ‘best practices’ become local policies? In a new #UrbanStudies article, Byeongsun Ahn and Yuri Kazepov explore how transnational policy learning unfolds across the local policy process, using Vienna's participatory budgeting as a case. @urbanfutures.bsky.social 📝➡️ t.ly/O89DR
Screenshot of the abstract of the article "Rethinking policy learning in urban policy mobility": Since the ‘mobility turn’, urban researchers have advanced our understanding of the contentious and relational nature of cross-border policy learning. Extant research has revealed how policy ideas move through transnational networks, social interactions, and informal dialog, forming assemblages of policy learning. Despite this rich literature that centers policy learning on policy circulation, we know relatively little about how learning unfolds throughout the full trajectory of their localization as a policy process. We fill this gap by taking the policy cycle model as an analytical framework. We investigate the whole range of policy activities that shape and transform policy learning into concrete policy components through a series of interconnected, iterative stages of the policy cycle within urban policy mobility. Using the introduction of participatory budgeting in Vienna as an empirical case, we show how multiple types of learned lessons, drawn from diverse actors and sources of knowledge, become enmeshed, streamlined, and articulated into the formulation and implementation of an international best practice as a local policy. We conclude by highlighting some analytical advantages of this policy-oriented approach for researching urban policy mobility and suggest directions for future research.
