![The other night, and many nights before, she threw an accusation:
She asked me, “What are you? A woman?”.
She has said this many times before.
That awful phrase.
I have always told her “no”. Her voice is strained and tired.
She has lost a lot in her life, and uses it as ammunition.
I feel more bullet holes opening up as she speaks to me.
I hope she won’t hit her target.
She asks me what is wrong then.
As if she doesn’t already know.
As if I haven’t tried to tell her.
It has been ten years.
At a certain point I can't help but yell at her.
She makes me carry the guilt of her expectations.

That I killed someone who never existed.
She says the others feel the same.
She says I'm outrageous for trying.
She says she loves me.

I don’t know what to tell her.
I can't just keep trading her pain for mine.
Right?
Despite this the lying continues.
Inside me there lives a much smaller person.
Very fragile.
Very weak.
Mute too.
A bit of an open secret.
Hidden right behind the eyes.
Tired.
Tired eyes.
