How is your organization helping your comms and creative teams build broader business acumen?

Watching freshmen grasp these business concepts for the first time has been one of the most rewarding parts of my second year in the classroom. When we empower storytellers with strategic business acumen, we build leaders who don't just execute campaigns; they shape organizational strategy.

If you want a seat at the decision-making table, you have to understand the business mechanics driving the organization: - How value is created versus mere "activity." - How risk is assessed and managed. - How societal impact aligns with financial sustainability.

Traditionally, communications and liberal arts disciplines treat business strategy as something students will "figure out on the job." But in today’s corporate landscape, operating in a communications silo is no longer viable.

"We need to introduce business principles to liberal arts majors early." That was the core premise behind a new course I designed and launched at UNC Hussman this semester.

It’s about being willing to speak up when something needs to be said, especially when it’s uncomfortable. That responsibility belongs to all of us. Sometimes leadership is simply having the courage to ask the hard question or say what others may be avoiding.

I recently attended an event with local business leaders focused on leadership courage, and it got me thinking about something I’ve been coming back to for a while. Leadership isn’t just about having the right title.

It’s easy to choose what feels safe. Real leadership means being willing to ask the uncomfortable question and start the conversation that needs to happen. When was the last time you put the dead cat on the table?

Torod Neptune @torodneptune.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
A former colleague once told me, “Don’t be afraid to put the dead cat in the middle of the table.” It’s a strange phrase, but it stuck with me. Sometimes everyone sees the problem, everyone knows it’s there, and yet no one wants to be the person who brings it up.

Teaching students and advising organizations through complex situations have taught me the same thing: authenticity and accountability matter most when pressure hits. Reputation management is not about having the perfect playbook. It's about how people respond when the playbook no longer works.

Tomorrow I'm speaking to the Triangle Impact Lunch Bunch in Raleigh on building connections in a disconnected world. We have more ways to reach each other than ever, and less willingness to be reached. Let's talk about the courage to change that.

If you’re struggling to retain young talent, maybe the question isn’t what’s wrong with Gen Z. Maybe it’s whether leadership is actually living the culture it promises.

Torod Neptune @torodneptune.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
Gen Z is often labeled “hard to manage,” but I see a generation with a high bar for authenticity. They question outdated processes, ask for transparency, and speak up when leadership says one thing and does another. That can be mistaken for entitlement.

What do CEOs need from communications now? I’ll tackle that question in my opening keynote at the Page Up Annual Conference in Atlanta on October 20. The opportunity for communications is bigger than supporting the business. It’s helping shape it. #Strategy #Communications #Leadership

Advising showed me what happens when organizations have to adapt in real time. The biggest lesson? Reputation is not managed by a playbook. When pressure hits, people remember how you respond, whether you take accountability, and whether your actions match your values.

A year ago today, I stepped away from corporate leadership to enter the classroom and launch Neptune & Co. A year later, I’ve learned more about leadership, reputation, and crisis management than I expected. Teaching showed me where the old playbook falls short.

Leaders and professors cannot prepare the next generation by fixing every small mistake. Clear expectations, honest feedback, and room to experience consequences are how young professionals learn accountability. Sometimes, letting people figure it out is the best leadership you can give.

I will not be your parent. At 9:30 on a Friday night, my inbox was full of freshmen trying to swap classes after the deadline. My response was simple: this is where you learn to take ownership.

Sometimes the best risk management strategy is simply getting far enough away from the noise to see what is actually happening.

Real leadership during a crisis is not about having the fastest reaction or the loudest response. It is about having the discipline to step back, assess what is systemic, understand what is temporary, and make decisions based on the long-term health of the organization.

One of the hardest things for an executive to do in a crisis is pause long enough to ask: Is this actually a threat to the business, or are we reacting to the intensity of the moment? That distinction matters.

Something starts trending, customers are reacting, employees are talking about it, and the media is amplifying it, so the instinct is to respond immediately.

Spending five weeks in Portugal gave me some distance from that noise, and the reset was surprisingly powerful. Coming back, the contrast was hard to miss. It made me think about how easily corporate leaders can fall into the same trap during a crisis.

In the U.S., we live in a constant state of low-grade panic. Politics, outrage, and social friction are everywhere, and when you are immersed in it every day, it can be difficult to tell what is actually important and what is simply loud.

True global leadership requires cultural humility. It means walking into the room willing to listen before trying to lead. Sometimes the biggest growth comes from realizing you are not the majority, you are not the expert, and you do not have all the answers.

When we enter a new market, work with a global team, or navigate a crisis, it is easy to assume our experience is the default. But what worked in one environment may not work in another, and our perspective is only one perspective.

And perhaps the greatest leadership advantage of the future will not be competing with machines, but developing the qualities they cannot replicate.

Torod Neptune @torodneptune.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
The harder things to teach are judgment, empathy, self awareness, courage and having a strong sense of what is right when the answer is not obvious. AI may become incredibly intelligent. Our opportunity is to become more human.

Torod Neptune @torodneptune.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
AI is changing what we do, how we work and how quickly we can make decisions. But if AI can increasingly analyze information, spot patterns and help us make decisions faster, then competing with AI on speed and information alone is probably not where humans are going to have the biggest advantage.

A tale of two Labor Day messages today

This Labor Day, I’m thinking about the people behind the progress. Every innovation, every breakthrough, and every successful organization starts with people willing to show up, solve problems, learn something new, and keep moving forward.

Torod Neptune @torodneptune.bsky.social · 07/09/2026
I believe that the biggest opportunities ahead will come from giving people better tools, removing the work that holds them back, and creating more space for the things that still require human creativity, judgment, leadership, and connection.

One conversation can motivate someone, but consistent trust, transparency and respect are what make people want to stay. Leadership is not just measured by what you accomplish. It is measured by whether the people around you become more capable, confident and successful because you were there.

Torod Neptune @torodneptune.bsky.social · 02/09/2026
In that environment, leadership cannot just be about having the right answers. It has to be about creating the conditions for people to think, make decisions, challenge ideas and keep learning. Because culture is built through patterns too.

Torod Neptune @torodneptune.bsky.social · 02/09/2026
People rarely leave a job because of one bad day. They leave because of patterns. That is becoming even more important as the workplace changes faster than ever. AI is changing jobs, expectations are shifting, and teams are being asked to adapt constantly.
