Driven by a hundred forms of fear, self-delusion, self-seeking and self-pity, we step on the toes of our fellows and they retaliate. "Our liquor was but a symptom. So we had to get down to causes and conditions. Therefore, we started upon a personal inventory. This was Step Four." #AA p. 64 #Sober
Stopping drinking isn't the hard part. It's what comes after that breaks most people. Anyone can put the bottle down for a while, but facing what made you pick it up in the first place is where the real work begins. Sobriety isn't about removing alcohol, it's about rebuilding the parts of you that learned to rely on it.

10th Step Promises. #AA p. 84-85 #SoberSky #Recovery
And we have ceased fighting anything or anyone-even alcohol. For by this time sanity will have returned. We will seldom be interested in liquor. If tempted, we recoil from it as from a hot flame. We react sanely and normally, and we will find that this has happened automatically. We will see that our new attitude toward liquor has been given us without any thought or effort on our part. It just comes! That is the miracle of it. We are not fighting it, neither are we avoiding temptation. We feel as though we had been placed in a position of neutrality-safe and protected. We have not even sworn off. Instead, the problem has been removed. It does not exist for us. We are neither cocky nor are we afraid. That is our experience. That is how we react so long as we keep in fit spiritual condition.

"When we meet someone who seems to have a good attitude about everything, that really isn't the case. The person simply has made a lot of independent choices to have a good attitude about many individual things." -Shad Helmstetter #SoberSky #Recovery #9th Step Promises
If we are painstaking about this phase of our development, we will be amazed before we are half way through. We are going to know a new freedom and a new happiness. We will not regret the past nor wish to shut the door on it. We will comprehend the word serenity and we will know peace. No matter how far down the scale we have gone, we will see how our experience can benefit others. That feeling of uselessness and self-pity will disappear. We will lose interest in selfish things and gain interest in our fellows. Self-seeking will slip away. Our whole attitude and outlook upon life will change. Fear of people and of economic insecurity will leave us. We will intuitively know how to handle situations which used to baffle us. We will suddenly realize that God is doing for us what we could not do for ourselves.

Are these extravagant promises? We think not. They are being fulfilled among us, sometimes quickly, sometimes slowly. They will always materialize if we work for them.

"When I first heard recovering alcoholics laughing, I thought I was in the wrong place. I was angry that they treated the disease so lightly. Then slowly I began to see that laughter is part of joy - a deep joy that comes from personal healing. Laughter is spiritual..." -FLDM #SoberSky #Recovery
Sobriety is more than just putting down the drink - it's picking up life. It's waking up without regret, looking in the mirror with pride and learning to love the person staring back. It's the quiet strength of saying no, the raw beauty of feeling everything, and the courage to heal what was once numbed. It's laughter that isn't forced, sleep that isn't haunted, and peace that isn't borrowed. Sobriety isn't a punishment - it's a second chance, a love letter to yourself, and the greatest give to your future.

Letting go of your old life can be difficult, especially for heavy drug users. They often find that ALL their friends were users, and they now feel utterly alone. This is the hardest part of recovery, and where a support group like NA or SMART can help. Find a meeting and go, you will feel better!
