A new release for Applied Machine Learning for Tabular Data at aml4td.org We've written a substantial chapter on (single) trees, a little more on neural networks, and fixed many typos. Another release will come soon, including the entire neural net chapter, covering DL and foundational models.

We're happy to announce our new #rstats package: lorax. If you fit tree-based models, lorax enables conversion to the party package's format (for making nice tree diagrams) and has methods to compute which features were used, the number of terminal nodes, etc. opensource.posit.co/blog/2026-07...

Working in early drug discovery required some optimistic cognitive dissonance for me. My prior belief was higher (~95%) but we still had to work as hard as possible to see if we could make it work.

Apropos of something I'm working on right now: It's great to use Claude to break down technical walls and perform tasks that you wouldn't have otherwise been capable of. But you MUST still fully understand what you're trying to do and how you (and Claude) are doing it. You need to be driving.

I struggle with using these tools given how much IP theft occurred. They probably don’t leverage that data as much as they did initially. If they had just stopped doing shady things and mea cupla’ed, I’d feel slightly better about using them. It’s basically the ends justifying the means.

There’s an additional amount of “reinforce that the benefit of this outweighs all the bad things we did to get to this point” I’m theoretically ok with this since you can’t change the past. It’s abusive if it’s used to justify current and future actions. It’s an ethical nightmare for a user.

I've just tried Posit Assistant on the free plan and must say, I'm impressed. Using the super-cheap Gemma 4 26B model (10% cost of Sonnet) on free plan it worked instantly. Hats of to the #posit team for integrating this into RStudio and allowing people to test with free plan!

I would list them as an author in the *man file* for a specific function that uses it, and maybe reference if it was from another R package or public piece of software. I would reserve things in the description file for significant and deliberate additions to the package.
