And if you're thinking, 'Etchings - meh', go and read the chapter on Griggs in Christopher Neve's Unquiet Landscape: it will help you see them in all their darkened glory. www.thamesandhudson.com/products/unq...

Unquiet Landscape
Christopher Neve’s classic book is a journey into the imagination through the English landscape. How is it that artists, by thinking in paint, have come to regard the landscape as representing states ...

Today's very exciting book post is Jerrold Northrop Moore's lavishly illustrated biography of F.L. Griggs, the great etcher (and patron saint of the Etch a Sketch). My dodgy camera doesn't do justice to these haunting ruin-scapes.

I very much enjoyed A Hobby of Mine by @betarish.bsky.social from @brokensleepbooks.bsky.social - joyful waves of repetition and variation that put me in mind of Frank Kuppner

A hobby of mine is attempting to write things the Way David Foster Wallace might have done, and failing.
A hobby of mine is buying any second-hand edition of The Golder Gate by Vikram Seth I ever see.

And then Ivan Klima's A Summer Affair. I'd read and enjoyed Klima's Love and Garbage, and liked the first few chapters of this, but then it settled down into a rather tedious and distressing tale.

Followed by Simenon's frankly brutal roman duré The Snow Was Dirty, about a petty criminal in an occupied city. One of the bleakest books I've ever read...

Recent reading... Love a bit of Arnold Bennett and Buried Alive was no exception. Light and comic (and a bit dated e.g. in gender attitudes) but adroitly done and really brilliant in places, especially when it offers a few ideas on the artist's experience...

Ain't that the truth. Recent high point was a prawn salad in Stockholm airport, but otherwise a constant battle (in which I'm often defeated).

We've been told, "Turnitin have confirmed they will not implement the new end user licence agreement during this academic year, with no changes expected before 1 September 2027 at the earliest." But presumably it's coming at some point.

Absolutely. 2-3 years ago my students knew that genAI was wrong. Now, after having been heavily encouraged to use it by the university, there's much more misconduct and much more confusion (both genuine and performed) about what's allowed.

Mann's one of those writers where as I'm reading him I know it's good, and often I'm very much enjoying it, and yet there's not much momentum - it's always a bit effortful
