The Racoșul de Jos Geological Complex is a protected area of national interest—classified as IUCN Category IV (a geological nature reserve)—located in Brașov County, within the administrative territory of Racoș commune.
This natural area, covering 95 hectares, is situated in southeastern Transylvania (at the junction of the Baraolt and Harghita Mountains with the Perșani Mountains) and in the northeastern part of Brașov County, immediately adjacent to the county road (DJ131A) connecting the villages of Mateiaș and Augustin.
The nature reserve was designated a protected area by the Government on January 11, 2006. It encompasses basaltic formations (featuring spectacular and diverse structures—such as volcanic tuffs, lapilli[3], lava flows, and volcanic scoria—resulting from intense eruptive activity) dating back to the Quaternary period.
