I'm having the last panel inscribed on my tombstone. COMIC ◆ www.smbc-comics.com/comic/break PATREON ◆ www.patreon.com/ZachWeinersm... STORE ◆ smbc-store.myshopify.com

4-panel SMBC comic update. A man is walking happily, saying "Welp, time to have a beer and wank for three hours." He stops himself, saying "WAIT A SEC. WHAT AM I DOING WITH MY LIFE?" The man then turns to a robot and tells it to tackle those tasks, with the robot confirming "initiating... chug and tug..." In the next panel, the man is seen leaning over a stack of paperwork, thinking to himself "Finally, free for more toil."

This is getting the typical Bluesky-cynical pushback, but corporate performative allyship is undoubtedly a good thing for queer people because it means the culture is making it difficult to be publicly anti-queer. The complaints that it's performative are laughable because what do you think PR is?

Pretty normal. The decisions my parents made for the Big Move were rather questionable.

I feel this in my core. The disgust of being suckered by an astonishing nature photo or cute animal clip, only to realise its manufactured: a hollow lie for no good reason where we should find wonder and delight. Sickening is right, @birmo.bsky.social gets it.

Work tank rebuild take 2. Corner-based design. Added some ludwegia from home to break up the Java fern. Bought some more tetras and khuli loaches to top up the population. They all seem pretty happy about it.

Sharpening Stone of some kind

Once it had settled, i wasn't loving the work tank. I refuse to spend much money on it, so I'm stuck with a terrible in-tank powerhead filter & very ordinary light, so scape options are pretty constrained. Had a do over today, from the old island to a corner design.

I went to see TISM at the Forum last night, which was chaotic fun. I've avoided larger gigs since moving to Melbourne - and particularly post-covid - due to being hypervigilant in crowds, though it turns out gigs are much kinder on the brain than shopping centres. I may have to get out more!

This nails it! Exec don't do knowledge work. They direct staff to do it, critique it, and use it to make decisions. AI feels like directing a compliant staffer who just *gets them*. They don't realise that it's the DOING of the knowledge work that creates the underpinning understanding.

This is wild - somebody did a deep dive into the real stories behind this famous XKCD: sheets.works/data-viz/hol...

an XKCD comic showing a precariously assembled tower of blocks. much is labelled "all modern digital infrastructure." a thin leg down at the bottom is labelled "A project some random person in Nebraska has been thanklessly maintaining since 2003."

It’s been a grey day in the Perth Hills today, which brought us some much needed rain after a very dry spring so far this year 🌧️ These flowers did their best to add a dash of sunshine yellow to the day though 💛 #ozflora #wildoz #nativeplants #inaturalist #bloomscrolling 🌿

Tricoryne elatior - Yellow-rush Lily - bright yellow star shaped flower with yellow stamens

Hyalosperma cotula (I think) - Dailey like flower in pale yellow with a bright yellow centre

Stylidium diuroides - Donkey Triggerplant - single yellow flower with four petals and the trigger extending behind the flower

Podotheca gnaphalioides - Golden long heads - a cluster of small yellow flowers

I love box crabs, probably because of the way their claws fit so neatly in with the carapace (and also, just look at it!). This is Calappa calappa, disturbed on a night dive in Lembeh and rapidly scuttling away from the bright lights. #MarineLife #Invertebrates #Wildlife 🌿🦀

A rounded crab with large claws that fit neatly into the space in front of its body. It is brown, with reddish spots on it; the claws have some lighter ridges on the lower parts and raised teeth on the upper parts. The crab is scuttling over black sand, although you can't see this in the photo because its legs are hidden. But trust me, it was *moving*

Fancy floofy Phidippus jumping spider boy, his 1st segment on his 1st leg pair so magnificently floofy it's brushing his bluish green face. He's perched on an oak twig, that 1st leg pair spread wide likes he's doing pantomime flying airplane

Disgusting, yet not surprising. I encountered similar power dynamics in my early career in science. Luckily I could afford to quit that job. Harder to quit a PhD or post-doc position that could make or break your career.

One thing about Copenhagen is that there's tons of dense housing but you *never* find it fronting a busy road with cars racing past, which describes about 90% of the apartments in the US. They manage to make it feel tucked away, private, cozy. (These are all from Sluseholmen, my dream neighborhood.)

If your "information well" has been poisoned enough through existing biases & algorithmic amplification; if your education is inadequate for the complexity of the moment; where simplistic solutions feel "right": populism - right or left - will persuade you. I think we're in serious trouble.
