🌱 As part of my fellowship research, I built a tiny experiment called Prune. It’s like journaling, but with branches.

Which tool (or mcp) have people had the most luck with in terms of adding knowledge/memory? I rolled my own a while ago but I often have to remind my app to remember something, which totally defeats the purpose.

If one guy holds most of the tech people rely on, it is a vulnerability, but also it's one guy: as a global population we should be able to easily just take it from him, so it seems to me the real vulnerability is an internalized belief that private ownership is more sacrosanct than human thriving.

Techno Feudalism is incredible. Still working my way through it and will probably reread it too, but it has made me surer than ever that you can't put your energy (be it creativity, cultural artifacts or problem-solving/engineering) into systems you don't want to see reproduce

Other than boycotting businesses and calling representatives, have you found solid ways to resist the regime? I want to do more but I’m struggling on deciding what that “what” should be.

Meta illegaly downloaded 80+ terabytes of books from LibGen, Anna's Archive, and Z-library to train their AI models. In 2010, Aaron Swartz downloaded only 70 GBs of articles from JSTOR (0.0875% of Meta). Faced $1 million in fine and 35 years in jail. Took his own life in 2013.
“Torrenting from a corporate laptop doesn’t feel right”: Meta emails unsealedA photo of Aaron Swartz (1986-2013) when he was 19.
Last month, Meta admitted to torrenting a controversial large dataset known as LibGen, which includes tens of millions of pirated books. But details around the torrenting were murky until yesterday, when Meta's unredacted emails were made public for the first time. The new evidence showed that Meta torrented "at least 81.7 terabytes of data across multiple shadow libraries through the site Anna’s Archive, including at least 35.7 terabytes of data from Z-Library and LibGen," the authors' court filing said. And "Meta also previously torrented 80.6 terabytes of data from LibGen."

Structurally disciplined collective sense-making for civics is everyone’s problem because it’s been no one’s problem. News orgs can only make things that they can own and get credit for. Great people + small orgs work on pieces of it all the time, but the info environment…is what it is.

I've always wanted to build tech for good. More and more it feels like the amount of harm done just by paying into things like AWS, G Suite, OpenAI, kind of outweighs any potential good a tool could do. Where to go? What to build?

I have wanted to see same-style thumbnail images for user-created content for so long. I finally had time to get it working on my spaced-repetition project and it turned out to be way more overwhelming than I expected 😅 Got to find a way to tone it down!

"Intuitive design" is less about designing something that is intuitive and more about designing something that builds intuition through feedback loops. This distinction is especially important if you're building an innovative product, where prior intuition does not exist.
