To automate the calibration process for my new HF Tracer production I’m experimenting with the PE4302 DSA (Digital Step Attenuator). It’s not super accurate but predictable with reproducible results. The PE4312 would probably be better but I couldn’t find any off the shelf modules with it.

Now and then I test LLMs with small coding tasks. This time Gemini. Conclusion not very good. It needed 7 tries to get close to a working solution. It took so much time to debug the proposals that I wonder where the productivity gain should come from. I hope I didn’t waste a lot of water and power.

I hope the EU will focus more on EU based AI like Germany's SOOFI-S. Working with AI for product development, people quickly realize how much of their knowledge and ideas go the other way around. So they get AI support which can boost their productivity but in return they have to share every detail.

Next iteration of my antenna analyzer. Working on the third PCB prototype now. The firmware is about 70% done. It has a remote terminal with (simple) speech, it tells you “long”, “short”, etc. So hands-free.

My new shack. It’s a fully enclosed and insulated cabinet in the workshop. No dust gets in and the temperature is regulated. Important for keeping the humidity in check.

Testing prototype 2 and do some enclosure fitting. The signal generator of the HF Tracer (antenna analyzer) works as expected; >20dB above the first harmonic. Good enough for its purpose. Next week testing the ADC and work out a small problem with the power circuit. #hamradio #electronics

Entshitification of serverless and npm chaos. I’m returning to simplicity. PocketBase with a plain vanilla JS framework for the front end. PB is plug and play, no fuss. JS framework has no dependencies besides a simple PB client lib. No endless npm or dev tool ocean with ongoing version management.

Hf Tracer prototype first measurements. The latching power circuit worked as intended but I need to shorten the button hold time (smaller cap). I need to find a better LDO (lower dropout). The Si5351 works okay but I spotted some interference. Next I’ll move on to te LNA section.

JLCPCB tip: yesterday I learned that color matters when ordering minimal quantity PCBA for prototypes. I couldn’t order less than 5 (assembled) boards. Some parts are expensive and I don’t need 5 prototypes. Turned out you only get the option of 2 for green and black.
